Reading/Phonics in Reception

I am a nanny and have helped many a child through the foundation stage and have even assisted in Reception classes; however when my boss (currently looking at schools for current charge) asked me how they teach words/phonics/reading in schools, my mind went blank.

So can you help me explain to her in laymans terms how they teach it and what jolly phonics is all about as my head hasn't had to deal with it in a while and although I can help teach phonics/listen to my charges read I have no idea how to explain how it is taught and why that method etc.

Well, a read of some of the threads on here shows clearly that every school appears to be different!

I suggest that you have a look at www.phonicsinternational.com where there is lots of excellent advice and information.

Sorry, I was being rather flippant (but seemingly it is true ...) but would agree with maizieD - the site she recommends is good.

Hi MogandMe, our partnership with Pearson means we have a range of pages on the site that explain the current teaching of phonics. You can find the phonics index page here, it links through to examples of phonic lessons, tips on work you can do to support phonic teaching at home and videos about phonics.

Take a look and let us know what you think, we're always eager to improve out content.
