year 2 ds homework is better than stuff he does at school.

My year 2 ds does amazingly good homework all by himself. He has great ideas and writes loads with good handwriting and punctuation. Even though he is doing well with writing at school and his teacher is happy, his homework is so much better that stuff he does at school. When i asked him why he said it is because it is quiet at home. Now i am worried he his not able to show his full potential to his teacher.

I would imagine this is quite common - certainly I seem to have the constant feedback of "DS could do better if he didn't keep getting distracted" from his teachers.

My DS has got better at blocking out external distractions as he's got older, but other than repeatedly telling them to concentrate on what they are doing and not what everyone else is doing I dont' know what you can do (if you find out, do tell me ...). If it's a specific child that he sits next to that is the problem, I guess you could asked for him to be moved, but sounds like it's generally things going on round him that are the distraction rather than 1 particular thing?

Yes i think it is the class as a whole. The table they sit at is full. They all chatter until teacher tells them to stop, then probably start again a few minutes later.
When i was at school we had our own desk which seems much better.
The teacher has asked me how long it takes ds to do his homework and if he does it on his own. I think she believes me that he does and it doesn't take long, but maybe she thinks i'm an awful pushy mum who does his homework for him.

my DD year 2 does fabulous work at home, lots of stories etc. So i just send them into her teacher. I write a note in the liason book and i have never had a bad comment back. I have done this since year 1.
In fact when i went for parents evening, the majority of work in DD's writing folder was the work she had done at home and sent in and the teacher had stuck into her book. Am in two minds about whether this is correct but it allows her teacher to see what she can actually do when she is not distracted by the other 29 children in the class.Her teachers are fab, but she seems to be in a year group that are struggling.

As redskyatnight says I think this is fairly common. Unfortunately they have to learn to concentrate in a classroom and not be distracted. Some learn earlier than others and some will always find it easier than others (some never learn unfortunately). Teachers do understand this and are always having to split up groups or pairs of children who just don't 'work' well together. You might want to have a word with the teacher just to check on the situation again, but I think the teacher is probably well aware of how well your child can do, so I wouldn't be overly concerned.
