uniform question

When girls have to wear a dress in the summer...can they wear bike shorts (tight white shorts) underneath them so when they hang upside down during recess or their legs aren't completely closed, you don't see their underwear?

It seems prohibitive for girls to run around and play with these dresses on when the boys can have shorts and run freely...

Would a headmaster tell my daughter she was going against the uniform

Your take?

Thanks.

As it's November you have plenty of time to ask the headteacher before it becomes an issue ... all schools are different

scaevola · 26/11/2011 14:37

It never bothered DD - nobody told her it was "wrong" and she was totally unconcerned.

If you must make an issue of it, just put the shorts on her. I doubt the teachers will be checking underwear.

I bet half of MN will tell you that you're ridiculously sexualising your girls by thinking anybody cares if their knickers are on show.

Actually, by y2-y3 the girls themselves are very aware of not wanting to show their bottoms off, so I think lycra shorts a good idea.
I think you have to ask your school if they would object. Our school wouldn't object.

Why can't girls run around in dresses Confused

AurraSing · 26/11/2011 14:44

My dd has never had a problem with showing her knickers, but I can't see the problem with wearing cycling shorts underneath a dress. Why can't she just wear summer shorts?

mrz · 26/11/2011 14:49

This summer one of the girls in my Y2 class wore shorts under her dress the rest quite happily hung upside down and did cartwheels and no one took the slightest bit notice

HauntedLittleLunatic · 26/11/2011 15:00

At my kids school they are only allowed to do cartwheels etc. If they DO have shorts under

MigratingCoconuts · 26/11/2011 15:20

I'm impressed by your forward planning....

snowball3 · 26/11/2011 15:22

.......although it might be hard to find white cycle shorts to buy in December

sameyeam · 26/11/2011 18:06

My daughter is 5, she hates dresses and we don't have dress codes in the US. So, for her, she prefers to wear shorts under dresses (if she has to wear them) so she can play around and no one will see her underwear. I am thinking of this since we will be moving over there summer term. Some schools are more lax on dress codes and some state schools allow girls to wear shorts or slacks while some indie schools are pretty strict on dresses. So, I was just hoping the shorts under the dress would be ok if we have a school that has dress rules.

Most of the state schools I know don't enforce the wearing of summer dresses, so I can;t imagine wearing shorts under them would concern them.

UniS · 26/11/2011 19:55

quite few girls at DS's school wear shorts. Not under skirts, just school type grey , black or navy shorts and polo shirts instead of skirt and polo top.

startail · 26/11/2011 23:43

Never been an issue, whether in winter skirts and socks or summer dresses.
I'm sure we get the odd flash of bright pink knickers in the park, but no one mentions it do the girls don't care.

Joyn · 27/11/2011 00:19

My friends dd had a few issues about not wanting to show her knickers in school & they got her a school skort (think they're actually more common in the US, basically look like skirt at front, but are in fact shorts).

CardyMow · 27/11/2011 01:09

Most of the girls at my DS's primary (state school, but V. strict uniform code, even down to shoes and hairstyles - no cut patterns in hair allowed, no highlights, no unusual hair colours), either wear navy cycle shorts under their summer dresses, or they wear culottes in navy (school colours), or they just wear the same uniform shorts as the boys.

HTH.

It has never been a issue in any of the 3 schools I have had children in that used uniforms. None of my daughters (I have 3) have asked for shorts or expressed embarassment about showing their knickers. I do not recall any whom does wear such.

I do however have several friends whom still shutter over their uniform prescribed school knickers (and not a single one whom used them as knickers they all say they wore other proper ones underneath them.

ask the head and then see what your daughter wishes. She may not care if she does by all means stick her in some short lycra shorts.

MitziKinsky · 27/11/2011 12:11

At the junior school DS1 went to the girls had to wear white shorts under summer dresses or they weren't allowed to do hand stands.

I seem to be the only person on the planet that doesn't care if anyone sees my DDs pants.

Lonnie · 27/11/2011 12:48

noooo Mitzi I am right there with you
