Help - Equivalent Fractions & Decimals!

Although I can look at 3/4 and know it's the same as 2/8 how do I explain the "proper way" to work it out to my DD?

Also how do I explain the "proper way" for working out the following:-

What decimal is the same as 1/5?

What fraction is the same as 0.9?

Maths was never my strong point!!

3/4 is the same as 6/8 (both top and bottom (numerator & denominator) times by 2)

divide 100 by 5 = 1/5 = 0.20
or 1/5 = 2/10=0.2

0.9 = 9/10

(decimals conversions are always x/10, x/100 etc)

decimals are a whole part divided by 10 so 0.1 is a whole divided into 10
and 1/10 is also a whole divided into 10
so 0.1 is 1/10
so 0.9 is 9 lots of 1/10 so 9/10
