DD1 has just been on a history field trip where they had to bring a "toga". She's 9, but small for her age.

She used an old white sleeping-bag liner we had kicking around. I guess that would have been about the length of a bed sheet, but narrower than a single sheet. And it was a bit big. So if you are buying material, I guess you are looking for about 2m long by about 1m wide at the most. Probably a bit narrower.

She wore a plain white T-shirt, wound the sheet around her and tied a bit of rope round her waist. She made up the folding herself - has got very into the Roman Mysteries books and insisted she knew what to do. It looked quite a lot like a sari to me, but who am I to argue!

Why not a lower status Roman and go for a tunic ? Cut sleeves off large long T shirt, add a belt and sandals.

value sheets are cheap in tesco. I have half of one left after cutting it up for a victorian costume. Smile

My (then) 10 year old wore a large white man's t-shirt with a bit of gold braiding tied round the middle, and we bought a couple of metres of cheap, purple lining material and arranged it, toga-like around him. He wore flip-flops and we made a laurel 'headdress' out of some pipe cleaners and gold paper . It looked good!

Wood work equally well for a girl I think!!

When my ds had to dress up he wore a tunic rather than a toga, or should I say hid dad's beige round-neck T-shirt.

Mind you we did use silver card to tart it up to make him into a soldier.
