Just wondering at what stage a child in Yr 1 should be on?

Everything from Dickens to cv words, and everything inbetween. Try looking at ORT's website, it has an age thingy scale on it.

This is akin to the "how long is a piece of string" question.

In Y1 the "normal" range of ability is literally from just being able to read basic words to reading chapter books quite fluently.

Most children in DD's class seem to be around ORT stage 3-5, if that helps?

Yes thank you....was just after an average really!

My DS is on 1+ and still getting quite a few sounds muddled!

DS (feb born Y1) does a different phonics system but is roughly in line with ORT level 4. having just had parents evening I'm happy he's progressing well think he's in the upper rather than lower 50% of the class but clearly not a genius Grin

agree with others, there is generally a huge range. however in ds yr 1 class most on stages 3-9 with a few 'free readers'

The stages indicate mainly how many of the tricky words (the Sight Words on my website) a child can read without hesitation.

It's an English thing, because only English has letters/spellings with more than one sound (e.g. the o in on, only, once, other, woman, women). Some children are much better at coping with those than others.

My DS is Y1 and also on 1+.
He is just starting to get to grips with phonics tbh.

From what he was telling me this morning a lot of boys in his class are on the same stage.
