My DD is in year 2 and will be 7 shortly. Her parents evening went really well she is a very good reader and even better writer apparently but not so good in maths. Anyone any advice at this age what I should be working on or anything thats great to buy. Think shes quite good with number myself so maybe its all the shape and money thing??

Cbbc Bitesize is good if you don't mind her going on the computer. You can pay for other sites but I wouldn't bother personally.

any KS1 books are good, you can usually get 3 for a fiver at The Works or similar places. I bought 6 at Lidl recently! (have one in KS1 and one in KS2)

As for money, get a load of coins and do simple sums with them. I found 'if this choc cost 17p and you had 50p, how much change would you get?' worked well, with the (mini) smartie as a reward! [bad mother emoticon]

you can register for free on tutpup. Its a fantastic web site where children complete maths/spelling games. They can compete against other children from all around the world. It caters for children of all abilities from year 2 right up to year 6. I have used this with my class and they love it! The children are all playing at home and the results are really showing in the class Grin

Hi mummc2

I found the campaign for real education curriculum info on mathematics www.cre.org.uk/docs/primary_maths_curriculum.pdf really helpful because I could then understand the progression in plain english.

If your DD is not doing a lot of the things mentioned for Year 2 (6 - 7 year olds) then you may want to look into additional materials. MN recommends the Carol Vorderman workbooks - shop.pearsonforparents.co.uk/5-7/EnglishMathsWorkbooks/EnglishMathsWorkbooks.aspx but if you look on the education page, under primary and maths there is also some good information.

BBC bitesize www.bbc.co.uk/schools/ks2bitesize/maths/ and BBC LEARNING www.bbc.co.uk/learning/ is also starting (in BETA - so buidling and trialling still) but there is all sorts of info on the curriculum, great worksheets, links to games and videos. It's a great website and useful for all subjects.
