Diwali day and costumes

So we have a little over a week until Diwali day at DSs school and there is a request for costumes I am struggling a bit with this one having done fine with victorian and chinese costumes already in the last year. Has anyone got any ideas for my 2 DSs aged 4 and 6, but would probably both fit into size 3 and 5 costumes?

You plan on buying them?
Are you looking for any of the characters from the story? I'd dress them as monkeys and have them support Hannuman in building his bridge.
Or long sleeved shirt without collar, leggings, bow and a few bits of jewellery and they could be Rama or Lakshman.
Unless they want to be demons and kidnap Sita?

There are lots of sites where you can download masks.

Would prefer not to buy, and either cobble together or make - am reasonably crafty. Am not familiar with the story so a bit of homework for me might help here!
