Ds currently adding and subtracting, doing well IMO, he is using his fingers but as numbers get bigger gets tricky, does anyone use an abacus? Is it recommended? Thanks

most primaries use a number line for counting forward and back, or a number square

don't see that an abacuss would hurt but might be worth speaking to the teacher so that you don't confuse DS -maths is taught very differently now -I have A level maths and get confused sometimes lol

Thanks workshy good point with speaking with the teacher, we used macaroni the other day! But I will try a number line too.

They will probably use tokens of some sort, or a number line or number square as they get older.
