What happens after book band white?

My eldest is on white now and on all the charts they seem to go up to white and indicate this is around a level 2a/3c. Does this mean the book band coloured thing ends after white? If so do they just progress by picking their own books without any particular level?

Just curious really as to how it works and whether it is different in different schools.

Lime comes after white in the standard NC book banding. DS's old school did its own thing .

Every school is different. There are 7 more levels to get through after white at DC's school. Sigh.

They just go on and on and on...

brown
grey
KS2 blue
KS2 red (which takes you up to a secure level 5)

At our school there are many more colours after white, finally finishing in (I think) gold.

PS mrz, do they equate to NC levels, so if a child is on white say, are they 2a/3c and then up accordingly or are they completely separate?

There is a rough equivalence with NC levels dependent on the child displaying appropriate skills beyond simple decoding.
