y1 numeracy curriculum

My dd has just gone into year 1 and has lost confidence with her numeracy.
She is very much in the 'can't do it' mode although when you actually get her to try she can do it well.
At the moment her class are segmenting 4 digit numbers into thousands,hundreds,tens and units,on seeing this dd panicked and straight away said the inevitable 3 words but then did it easily(this was when i did it with her at home).
It is definately a confidence thing rather than a difficulty as such,i think this is because dd is good at most things but is average at numeracy.
What i was planning to do is lots of fun numeracy activities over half term but also i would like to go over the first few weeks y1 numeracy curriculum with dd just to check that she has taken it all in and not put her barriers up and turned off,is there a website that lists the y1 curriculum?

I'm surprised that she is expected to partition 4 digit numbers at the beginning of year one. At this stage they only need to be able to partition 2 digit numbers.

I thought it was quite a high expectation too,especially as they didnt really do much numeracy in reception,the hardest thing they did was probably counting in 2's and ordering numbers up to 20!!

Your dd must be good at maths if that's the work that her teacher is setting for her group. My y1 son is considered above average and his maths work never goes over 100. He wouldn't even know how to read the number 102 never mind 1002.

I agree that it sounds a bit much - DD also above average and although she can write numbers above 100 she would get confused with ie 102. She has been partitioning two digit numbers as well.

your comments are very interesting to me,dd's teacher told me she is finding it hard and lead me to believe that dd may have some sort of difficulty with numeracy,i refuted this as dd really does not,dd just has a problem participating in and listening to anything that doesnt interest her i.e numeracy.
Fast forward a few weeks and dd's teacher has now agreed with me and said that dd is much better with numeracy in school and managing ok.
Its really interesting that you have said your dc are good at maths and are not doing this kind of stuff,i wonder why our school are doing it

Either the teacher is way off the mark or there are some VERY gifted children in the class.
If you showed her a four digit number eg 4572 would she be able to tell you it said four thousand five hundred and seventy two- if not then the teacher is crazy to ask her to partition it!

My year 2 is considered quite good at numeracy but no where near partitioning 4 digit numbers. Only just getting hang of 3 digit numbers.

Yes, i showed her this morning and she had to think for a second and intitially said she couldnt do it,i replied she could and to have a closer look and she got it,it was 5010.
DD is very bright and having a full assesment next week(not organised by school but by ourselves due to various difficulties dd has been having particulairly sensory) but numeracy is not an area that this shows in,or so the teachers say,its not an area that dd is interested in or that she feel confident in.
I think there are a few in the class who are supposed to be very good at maths,so maybe thats what it is.

When I say only just getting hang of 3 digit numbers I believe he is aware of how to partition them but mostly the class have been doing 2 digit numbers.

I'm acctually a bit now,it was made out to me initially that dd had some sort of problem with numeracy and was struggling when it looks as though what they have been doing is really difficult.

Hi Mrsshears. I agree with the other posters, it sounds ridiculous that your DD's teacher gave them something really quite difficult to do and then implied she was struggling with it; I'm not surprised she found it tricky, most of a year 2 class would, a lot of year 3's. Very odd practice. Have you spoken to any other parent's about this?

I hadnt but i'm quite friendly with a couple of mums who my dd does after school activities with,i will have a chat to them about it.
Im some ways i'm relieved reading what you have all posted but it still makes me cross,no wonder dd has lost confidence.
