DD has homework which is a table to fill in with pictures of various 3d shapes. She has to fill in name, number of faces, vertices and edges. Mostly fine, although we did have to resort to modelling a lump of playdoh into the shape when she struggled to really visualise some of the trickier ones. I was impressed she knew triangular prism though (i didn't!).

My query is when you have a 3d shape with a pentagon at each end, or a hexagon at each end, what the hell are they called? I have tried googling without success.....

Many thanks in advance if anyone knows!

A prism. I think...

Bonsoir · 06/10/2011 20:37

Pentagonal prism
Hexagonal prism

RupertTheBear · 06/10/2011 20:37

pentagonal prism, hexagonal prism etc

Ooh, you have similar homework to me us dil, we're stuck too!

dilbertina · 06/10/2011 20:54

Thankyou everyone! Now I know what to google, pentagonal prism etc is right. I did mention dodecahedron mrz, as that was lurking in the recesses of my brain but she looked at me totally blankly so I don't think they're on to that yet!

Right, so tomorrow I'll mention the fact she knew it was triangular "prism" and get her to look again at the ones she answered "pentagon" and "hexagon" (and maybe take a look at how you spell "triangular" as that's pretty random at the moment!)

The homework has so jumped forward from year 2, I need to get revising!

I did dodecahedron with my Y2s today Hmm using the bgfl site

You're obviously further forward than dd's class then mrz. I'm grateful for your advice.

Ha! DD got this homework today (also yr3) I looked at it and was very glad that I'm working this weekend so DH gets to 'advise' instead Grin

It is making me feel slightly less crap that I'm not the only one struggling! Thankyou cadelaide and mrsdmitri.
