Y3 Maths help

My DD1 in Y3 has always found maths a bit tricky. She finished Y2 with a 2a
and I was hoping she would be ok this year. However her teacher says she is concerned that she is falling behind already and has asked that she do some extra group work with one of the TAs at playtimes to help her catch up.

I am glad the teacher has spotted that she needs a bit more support so early in the year and I believe this involves some extra homework. Just wondered if anyone has used Mathletics or similar and would you recommend or would this and the extra work be all too much?

She is a 2a and they are concerned about her!

A 2a is the target for the end of Y3. You go to one hellofa pushy school.

I use mathletics with my son, and when he was younger I used maths whizz.

There is the chance to try out maths whizz before you buy, mathletics there isn't.

Maths whizz imo has the edge for younger students because the explanations and examples are more detailed and require less learner autonomy to follow. Mathletics is better when the parent wants to cpntrol the order in which the topics are presented and the degree of difficulty.

Mathletics live challenge is amazing for improving mental maths if you have a slightly competative child and the best thing since
sliced bread, according to my son.

I didn't like educationcity that much, far too limited if you really need to help your child make strides rather than just provide additional practise or extension IMO. But still really nice considering the much lower price tag.

I'd say try out the maths whizz freebie option and see how she goes while you watch the videos about mathletics and see how it compares.

Maybe she hasn't progressed as much as expected with regards her individual targets. MN are usually quite vocal in attacking schools that let children drift until the rest of the class catches up! It sounds like an on-the-ball school.

I wouldn't call it a 'pushy' school and I am glad the teacher has realised her weakness so early in the school year. In fact I blame her Y1 teacher for her loss of confidence in the subject. She let her flounder for almost the entire year in Y1 and I didnt know she was struggling until a new new teacher took over when she went on maternity leave! So no I wouldn't say it was 'pushy' to offer weaker students a bit of help to catch up and I would like to do my bit too.

I did lots of extra work and confidence building her last year to make sure she was keeping up so I am happy to maintain this.

Yes but if she really is a 2a she is not a weaker student.

It's very, very odd to be on a maths intervention when you're working a year ahead of where you should be.

She is exceeding national expectations in maths shebird so either she is in a class extremely able children or we are missing some detail????

Yes they are a very able bunch in her class. Her teacher has said that this isn't special measures but more of a 'catch up' group. They are learning partitioning and she hasn't grasped this concept apparently. Like I say it has always taken her a bit longer to grasp any new maths ideas so I don't doubt that she needs a bit more help. Just because she was a level 2a at the end of Y2 doesnt mean all is wonderful and I should let her flounder

How has she achieved a level 2A if she hasn't grasped partitioning? I would be questioning the level.

I agree with Mrz; their levelling doesn't sound very accurate.

Possibly Mrz but I'm not all that bothered about levels TBH. She did come on lots last year and maybe shes forgotten things over the summer and needs a bit of a refresher. I guess the y3 teacher is doing her own levelling by the sound of things she's not happy about her progress either. I know shes not a maths whizz and will my help to do well which is why I asked about the programs.

If there are gaps in her knowledge then they need identifying and worked upon programs such as Mathletics aren't the answer
