Show & Tell Protocol

Hi,

DS started Reception last week. Yesterday we had a letter home which said that there would be show & tell every Tuesday.

DS had a show & tell box at nursery (shoe box which DS decoarated, each child had one). Many kids took this in every day with a different item. DS only took his in when he had something special to share, such as photos of a family day out, or the medal for best player at football or something he'd made. He took it in maybe once a month despite attending every day.

Which would be the right way to deal with Show & Tell at Reception?

Personally (teacher pov) I would prefer when something special. In my last class I had 30 year 2s and just couldn't get through them all when they wanted to do show and tell (esp as they all wanted to do it but were not great at listening to others). I used to have a rota system in the end as otherwise got crying children and parents demanding to know why their little darling couldn't show off the stone they had found in their shoe!

If someone had come back from holiday/had something special they would let me know earlier in week and I would try and rota them in.

I agree with sugarandspice it makes it more worthwhile. I dread the stone in my shoe scenarios! One of my colleagues calls it Bring and Brag! :)

When I was training and working in ks1 there was a real mix between those with special things and those just coming up every week to talk about their latest comic book or graze on their knee. Any half decent teacher will manage the sessions well and decide whether to do it on a rota or limit time/kids. My advice would be to let your DS do whatever makes him happy and leave it to the teacher.
