No reading book a week in, advice needed!

DS been in Y1 a week now. No reading book (other Y1 class have reading books). Do I wait another couple of days (as I said to myself on Thursday last week) or approach the teacher and ask?

Enjoying the break from the trauma pleasure of reading but it is only the 'pleasing the teacher' that gets him to read with any focus, so am quite keen to get him started.
What do you think?

As a parent (I'm a TA too so can see both sides) I think it's best to send reading books home asap even if the level might not be quite right. What I find is the sooner they get back into the 'routine' of doing their reading book from school every evening the better. I got loads of books out of the library over the summer and we have reading books at home but DS refused to read them because they weren't the ones his teacher had sent home and he 'had' to read. Crazy I know, but now he is getting back into the swing of it and is becoming much more receptive to reading other things too.

We have been the same. However, I don't really see it as a problem as they have books at home and library books to read.
