Lowther Primary School

My DS is due to start at Lowther Primary School, Barnes on the 5th September, but I'm starting to have cold feet about it. We chose this school as it is the closest to home and it gets good results, but what if it's not a nice place? As we were new to the area when we applied for a place we don't know any other parents of children there and when looking around didn't get much of a feel for the place. Does anyone else have children there and/or knows people with children there? I would love to hear some oppinions on it.

There was something about this on mn a few weeks ago and then, as now, I changed my regular name to answer you. I have two dcs at Lowther and it's a fantastic school. It has an incredibly friendly feel to it, the staff couldn't be more accommodating and passionate about their work, the children are very well behaved and sweet, the grounds are huge and lovely, the new building that is going up next year will cause some disruption but will be amazing when finished. The profile of the school has changed drastically in recent years and it's getting more and more popular and receiving better and better results. You'll be fine, don't worry.

I have visited Lowther through work and am working there in September doing my job [mysterious]
I visit most primaries in Richmond and I think it is excellent. The commitment of staff/management is superb, children behave well and seem very happy.
I would prefer my dcs to go there than some of the more " outstanding " schools in the borough.

Hi there,

My DD is due to start in reception and I am going on the basis of parents I trust in sending her there. From what I can hear it's a lovely school. The only people who have anything negative to say are people who have never even been there.

I have a child in reception and y1 and would be happy to chat with you. FWIW I think it's for the most part a terrific school and my kids are really happy there. The teaching staff in my experience to date are terrific and the atmosphere and community spirit is really special.

My DS has been at Lowther Primary since Reception (he is in Y6 now) and both he and I can testify that it is a remarkable school. Mark Tuffney, the Head, is a lovely man, passionate about the school family, deeply committed to continuously improving results and the children adore him. My DS has done very well there, both academically and socially. I think what makes people raise their eyebrows is the school's location in the middle of a former council estate. But don't worry - this is Barnes, after all, and a high proportion of parents are professional people who have high expectations and are very involved in the school. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.

I just posted on another thread about this school. Agree 100 per cent with Nikadebika. Great school, great atmosphere. At every class assembly/show I've ever atteneded virtually every parent who can, work notwithstanding, shows up - everyone of everyone background cares about their children's progress

In case you are still not convinced, Lowther is a great school, my children have thrived there and have been there since Reception and my eldest is now in Year 6. I trust in Mr Tuffney who, as Nikadebika says, is passionate about the school ensuring that it is a place when children thrive, and feel safe. I know it is not in the posh part of Barnes which seems to worry some, but, it really is a lovely school where teachers really care about our children.

How strange to see this pop up in my active threads! I went to Lowther in the 1980s. It was a fine school then, and many of my classmates have gone on to do exceptionally well. My parents still live nearby and hear nothing but good things about the school. Good luck with your search for a school!

My one years experience from 1989 is not going to be helpful - but thankfully it sounds like it has changed a lot since then. Tomorrow's the application.

I do know someone with their daughter there now and seems happy.

Tomorrow is the deadline for applying for this year so if you need to then you need to get a move on.
