Uniforms for Reception in September

PFB starts school in September and we're hoping to get the uniform buying out of the way nice and early, but not sure exactly what we have to buy. They have a t-shirt and hoodie/sweatshirt with logo, but nothing specified about what colour trousers should be, or what PE kit should entail. Obviously I want to get the balance right between 'Nerdiest kid in the school with all the official kit', and 'Slightly neglected kid whose parents sent him in for PE with his bright green shorts and orange t-shirt'. Where is this point!?

And are the logo-bearing bookbags/PE bags obligatory, or will his Starwars one from pre-school do? There's no one to ask now they've broken up, and I don't want him to stand out on his first day! All the horrors of being the only girl whose mum had bought the regulation giant navy gym-knickers are coming back to me! And DH is remembering with horror being the kid whose wrists stuck out from even the most oversized school jumpers. At least there's no tie any more...
Any advice? (Apart from to lighten up, obv)

Phone the school on monday. Leave a message if no one answers. Ask receptionist to tell you all :)

I really don't think your child will get a reputation as a nerd in reception just for wearing fairly standard school uniform. I would recommend buying the school book bag as most infant aged children seem to use them. At DS's school they will not hand out reading books unless you have one as they get damaged down the bottom of rucksacks. I would go on the school website and see if there are pictures of children wearing uniform.

Yes I think you should lighten up, but only because I have been there and done the worriying .

I would get the bookbag, cheap black or grey trews from the supermarket (quite surprised that the school doesn't specify)

Worth getting the book bag - purely because any system for storing them (be it a big box for all, or individual trays) generally works on the principle of that size of bag... tie a ribbon or novelty key ring round the handle to make it easier to find in among a pile of them - could probably recycle the star wars bag for PE kit. If they haven't specified PE kit then I'd guess most things would go but can't go wrong with white T shirt and dark shorts from the supermarket really, same with trousers - black or grey if they don't specify (could look on school website to see what the consensus tends to be if it's one with any pictues at all on you can probably get an idea).

As for standing out - they're usually more keen on comparing who's got what cartoon character on their underpants than anything else when getting ready for PE!

Yes, DD (shes 4) has been at the school in the nursery for last term and most weeks I hear all about who wee'd in the school garden and who has what pants... and the girl that picks her nose and eats it

Well I would get the book bag and PE bag. But don't worry too much about what colour the PE shorts and t shirt are. I would get at least three sets of everyday clothes as they get school dinner and paint on. Don't worry about logos - just get the school colours. In reception they don't seem to notice about logos. But they would be out of place with a different PE bag in our school.

We've got plain grey trousers x 2, white logo polo shirts x 3, blue PE shirt x 1, shoes (not daps yet, can't find his size), logo sweatshirt x 2, and plan to buy shorts when I see them, I'm thinking white to go with a blue shirt. Haven't gone for bags, but will if everyone else seems to have in the first week or so. I do wish there was a bit more guidance on what was optional and what was obligatory! They also sell caps and beanies, but I assume that'll be up to us!
Can't wait to see him in it all. Hormones will probably get the better of me! Cheers all

No school list?? Yes to school bookbag

DD starts reception in Sept too and they are very relaxed about uniform. AFAIK they can't insist on uniform in state primary anyway. We can have red or blue jumpers, red or blue or white polo shirts, grey or navy trousers/skirt/dress. Essentially anything within reason that looks vaguely like school uniform...I think it's great. I still need to get PE kit and pumps. And put the labels on it all.

They were very clear that you can buy a school jumper or two if you want, but any sweater or cardi in the right colours would suffice. I would get some extra tops though, can't have too many IMO

I'm amnazed that you have not been given a uniform list or you sure it's not hidden in any paperwork that you have from them? Otherwise do as others have suggested and look on the web site.

If you have any school uniform shops nearby that might know as well.

i got for DD 2 x logo'd cardi (most of the boys had sweatshirts), bookbag (essential imo) and rainmac (i liked it as it was fleece lined!). the trousers/dresses are dark grey. White or grey socks and black shoes.

PE kit is either House colour plain t-shirt or white plain t-shirt and dark blue or black PE shorts.There was no logo'd PE bag in DDs school, if there was I might have bought it.

I was tempted to buy IT ALL just in case I got the choices wrong. As it happened, as the weeks wore on, most kids wore there own coats, brought they own bags in and rarely left the class wearing the expensive logo'd top you stressed so much about!
