Libraries' Summer Holiday Reading Challenge - anyone's dc taking part ?

I have drawn a blank mentioning this at school, nominated member of staff for literacy simply not interested in promoting it (yet again), no-one encouraging kids to give it a try. My dc will be signing up for it again this year, oldest keeps asking how soon we can sign up for it.

Do your kids know about it, does your school make parents aware of it ?

someone from the library comes into school every year to talk about this. dd3 has been nagging for over a fortnight! my 4 dc will all sign up again this year :)

A librarian came to school and told the children about it. Mine will be signing up on Saturday :)

We also have a librarian come in and both DC are very enthusiastic. Will be signing up as soon as we can get to the library.

Do you know what irks me a little ?

The member of staff who co-ordinates literacy has 2 daughters and their names appeared last year on the reading challenge progress display at the local library.

So if it's to be encouraged for one's own children why not promote it in school to bring it to the attention of other children/parents ?

That would irk me too, billynomatesmum. DCs are signing up today; fortunately their school did promote & the kids have been talking a lot about it.

We got the "circus stars" ticket thing giving all the details in DDs book bag a couple of weeks ago & signed up last Saturday :)

I would agree, can't see why they won't publicise via school - how much effort would it be to put something in every book bag & then those that are interested can follow it up?

Yes to all questions, but we go to library a lot and DS saw the posters there, anyway. DS2 wants us to get up there for 9am Saturday morning! I actually find it quite a faff (I have to keep track of all the bits of paper), would be happy if DC didn't go along.

Our library visits the local schools too. They explain the challenge in assembly and give out promotional bookmarks and letters so parents are aware.

I have only heard about it on mn. school are currently trying to get us to sign up for the library and have said that the library will keep the tickets there ... except that we tend to use 2 other libraries more often so not sure how it is going to work.

I asked about it at DS2 school, they said they think holidays are for fun. Older 2 DCs prep school sent the info home and so did youngest DD nursery so marched off to the library this morning and signed all 4 up, don't really care what DS2 school says he is off to the older ones school in Sept anyhow. Must admit I thought it looked very good and I want to read and get stickers too, the yo yo sounds cool and a medal, well that got my DCs reading the second we got back.

simpson you take books out, they read them tick off the book,author and if they liked it then get a sticker on the holograph card provided in the pack the library give you. After 2 books you get scratch and sniff stickers to go on the cardboard circus they give you, more stickers after each 2 books read and a certificate and medal after you have read 6 books.

THey came home with some info in their book bags. DD is signed up but then I work in the library at the moment.

Ds1 will be signing up tomorrow. Our local library works v. closely with his school (they are across the road from each other, which helps) and the librarians have been in school promoting it like mad.

Yes we got bookmark in bag about it. Although we have done it each summer since before they started school.

My DD is keen and we have signed her up. Sadly my DS has refused again as he hates reading. I would add a distraught emoticon if I knew how.

Yes, and yes. Although they made us more aware of it last year (Y1) than they did this year (Y2) - this year they made the children aware of it, but not so much in bookbags.

So how well does a child need to be reading to enjoy this scheme? DS falls between book crawl and book track, to old for one, not able to read enough for teh other.

UniS, All a child needs to be able to do is go to the library and say which book they liked best (possibly). They don't have to be able to read - so long as you read it to/with them. It's about using the library and enjoying books - not about reading ability at all.

We'll be signing up tomorrow.

She will love it!!

I guess I just choose books that I can read to her etc....

It is worth asking at the library about younger siblings - I think that each library has a set number of packs to hand out, so if it is limited they may want to give the school-age children first refusal - but that might vary from library to library.

To be honest my local library is rubbish at the scheme can never find the bos with the childrens names in it then the stickers last year they wrote on the record card did not put it back in the box was then of course lost . Which is the same way the bookstart scheme went So we will not be doing it.
However previous charges have loved it depends on the libary

Simpson my DD4 jned because as I put it to the librarian how can you let the older 3 do it if she can't, at this point she was sat happily reading 5 different books making up stories for the pictures looking sweet. They said the rules say 0-10 so go ahead let her join. Slightly concerned that next year eldest won't be able to it but she reads constantly anyway and doesn't need encouragement to do so

Both DC have signed up for it this year for the first time. DD will soon be 4 and DS7 signed up after his little sister had. The librarian did come to promote it at DS school in assembly, however his year was on a school trip.

billy that would irk me too. Sounds like she just can't be arsed.

I work at a library and we let any child join regardless of age, because they just read whatever is suitable for them. If a 13 yr old is still interested then great. Our problem is that we get loads joining, but is hard to get more than 50% finish rate. My 4yr and 6yr old have already signed up and are playing with the stages they got - seems to have become an extension to the dollshouse

Saw a couple with their 2 DC in the library on Saturday. Their DD looked about nine and asked to join and they signed her up. Their DS looked like he was in Reception and asked to join too.

Dad said "what do you want to join for, you don't like reading". The librarian heard the boy ask to join and asked if she could sign him up, Mum said "oh, reading isn't really his thing". The boy ended up with a DVD instead.

Really wish you could play back bits of people's lives for them sometimes and ask them what they were thinking .
