y6 sats result level 3 on teacher assessment

We got the reports yesterday and bascially the son got a level 5 on all the three test results but on the teach assessment results for english she has given him a level 3 for speaking and listening and 5 for reading and writing which has resulted him getting a 4. Is level 3 a fail and why it is so low. Please teachers can you explain what consist the speaking and listening part?

My DD isn't year6 but her speaking and listening is a lower level than all other areas. This is because she isn't very confident and doesn't contribute as much as the other children. Sometimes when she has to speak it a group she can stutter slightly.

Can you think of any reasons why his score might be lower than you expected?

SATs aren't a test of the child but of the school. I would think any good secondary school is going to look at this, and the new English teacher will quickly make a judgement of which assessment is the most accurate for the child.
BTW at my DCs secondary a lot of pupils from primary have gone up one whole level in a year in Maths (4a to 5a or higher). This doesn't phase the school at all.

thanks for your replies. He is very shy which is a shame as he is very bright and he gets very nervous talking in front of a group. He is fine with 1-1 but lacking confidence. Think we have to work on the confidence side during the holidays so he can start high school a little less shy.

This is completely seperate to the teacher assessment, which you can ignore.

And you can choose to ignore the official ones if you want and they are set for the school rather than the child.

Thanks for your message. I know the scores are set for the school rather than the child but when they start high school does the school actually see any of the results.

i think they may be passed on, but the secondary school will do it's own streaming soon enough, so I wouldn't put too much importance on them really.

NC levels are the child's levels. I'm not sure why people say it is a test of the school not the child. Schools are judged on them, yes, as secondary schools are judged on GCSE results. Nobody would say that GCSEs were a test of the school though? Yes, the secondary will see them. It may inform initial setting, but their own assessments will very soon take precedence.

I disagree. They are used as a measure of teaching, yes. But they give useful information about the child. You cannot say that a child with a 3 at KS3 has been taught less effectively than a child with a level 5 without an awful lot more information.

but you can if you look at the whole cohort and they all got below expected levels.

But we don't know that from the OP. The blanket statement "it's a test of schools not children" is misleading. It is a test of children. It is a test of what they can do. There are all sorts of reasons why they can do the things they can do. One of them is the quality of teaching.

well i am still trying to clarify exactly what the OP is asking anyway.

And from reading what she has put it would appear that her child has done well.

Hiya I do agree my child has done extremely well. For all the Test results ie reading, writing and maths and science all level 5. But on the english assessment results he got Speaking 3 reading 5 , writing 5 so the overall result is a 4 on the teacher assessment which is very good. I was just very surprised he got a 3 in the speaking part whereas he got a 5 in the other two parts. As some kids in Y2 actually got a 3 in speaking and listening at KS1. I was concerned that the teachers in high school would look at this result and think Hey he does not listen or speak. Hope this make sense.
