Yr 1 report: doesn't tell me much!

My DD report makes lots of statements on what she can do, for example " uses her voice with good expression and demonstrates imaginative and inventive thinking", "enjoys to read fiction and non fiction", can identify 3d and 2d shapes etc.

BUT, I have not idea if this is inline with what is expected of a year 1 student, or if there are any areas that she is particulary strong/weak. I just feel it's only giving me half the picture.

Is this what your school reports are like? I don't necessarily expect a grade, but just a comment or something!

what's her teacher like in general, does she take note of her pupils

Yep, this is what most school reports are like.

They take the teachers hours and hours to write, cause them endless stress - and tell us parents absolutely nothing :)

Welcome to the world of 'not comparing children'.

Are there no targets on it?

IndigoBell · 07/07/2011 14:24

But targets still don't tell you if the child is strong or weak.

All kids get a target, so it gives you no more information than 'this is the next thing they need to work on' - even if your kid was achieving well above expectations they would still get a target.

DD's report always tells us what they've done well at, anything they've struggled at and targets for next term/year. We also get an attainment grade (A-E - C is meets national standards or equivalent) and an effort grade 1-4 (1 is exceptional - very hard to achieve - and 2 is very good/above expectations). In juniors it also includes any test result as a %. But there is no comparison between other children in the class.

Yes, they would all get a target but the target can tell you if there are things they are struggling with.

In Y1 their target is to learn the alphabet, pratcise wiritiing digits, learn phase 3 phonics - then you know they are struggling in this area ime.

However, it depends on the reports. Some are much more infoamrtive than others.
