Times Tables. Twos. The first one.

How long should it take for a Yr1 child to learn this? My DD has (half-heartedly) been 'learning' this for probably ALL this term and we still haven't got it.

I'm a gnats leg away from just never ever ever trying the damn thing again. EVER.

Or standing in the back garden screaming 3 x 2 = SIIIIIIIIIX!!!!!!

The neighbours already think I'm bonkers so I'm not worried. I am however at my wits end. We have tried everything.

You have to sing it ......my ds's still 'sing' their 6 x tables if they need to use it and theyre 15 and 17 Blush.

Tried it! She shouts 'stop' before we've got to 4. So repeating wasn't going to work.

Tried learning them one at a time - had 1-6 last week, and added a few more this week. Sadly 3x2 was 6 last week, now it's 16.

We are still going to be suffering this when SHE is 16.

My 7yr old has been like this all year about tables and indeed all maths. He claims not to know the answers when we test him at home, plays dumb all the time but when it comes to the weekly test he invariably gets 10/10 with not too much effort. It is infuriating but I accept he is doing it for attention (he has very bright older brother) so we go along with it * sigh* Could this be a possibility with your child?

Are they meant to learn to day "2, 4, 6, 8..." or "1x2 is 2, 2x2 is 4..."? For some reason my DD can do the former but not the latter.

For instant recall they would need "five twos" or "5 x 2", otherwise they will need to count up to get the answer.

Thanks to Mrz I now use the Percy Parker Cd with my class and they love it. It is the only times tables cd I have ever used which seems to have worked- think it is because each song is actually different and relates to something real rather than just chanting for example the 9x table is about the 9 lives of a cat. Warning though you will be singing the songs yourself they are really catchy! The 2 times table song is available on Youtube.

DS in yr1 is not expected to know times tables as such but 2,4,6,8 etc...

He is expected to be able to count in 2s, 5s & 10s although he seems to have mastered that pretty easily so we are moving onto 3s & 4s.

Don't think he would "get" times tables yet....

Not much help I know!!! Blush

If he can count in 2s 5s and 10s start tables rather than counting in 3s etc.

My DD has been the same about learning times tables. I just stick on this in the back ground in the car and they have definitely helped.

My ds is also in year 1 and was struggling (or probably, if I'm honest, was being lazy about) learning his 2x table. I solved it by testing him on the way home from school. If he did well, he got a "special biscuit" when we got home. To start with there had to be a lot of second tries etc, but within a week he had got it. He has always had a biscuit when we get home from school anyway - but he didn't seem to notice that.....

MiceHave - nope the weekly tests bomb too! For a long long while I just saw that she didn't get most of them correct, then I noticed that she was adding the ones she didn't know.

hmc - Her reading, which she loves, is (surprise surprise) brilliant. Spelling is OK with simpler words, and she makes a good phonetic stab at others - I can always understand what she means. And she does like writing too - stories, lists of birthday party related stuff.

I'll see how she gets on in the test this Friday on the ones I thought we'd got covered. And hope for the best on the ones we've tried to do this week.

I should be a bit more patient, but I admit I find it very frustrating. And I can see why she might find it a bit boring, because times tables are, well.... boring!
