reading level question to teachers

Hello,
Ds is in reception, reading level ORT2 and JOLLY READERS level 2, plodding along nicely, Ds is youngest in the class 4.10.
Teacher comments are encouraging and positive vis a vis her reading, my question is:
Should Ds be reading higher level?
Ds sometimes complaint "books are too easy"
Suggestions appreciated.
Should I buy some books that are higher level and have Ds read them over the holidays?
Should mention, Ds class is very small, 11 children,( Ds claims) all reading same level.

Think ORT 2 is fine at this stage. Books read at home are supposed to be easy as they are just reviewing work in school. My dd (also in reception) can normally read all or 99% of the words in the books she brings home, but comprehension and fluency are as important as decoding.

My DS is now in yr1 but when in reception a lot of his class were on level 2 so I think its fine.

I did buy the read at home Biff/Kipper books for him to do (mainly because I know I will get my moneys worth as I can pass them onto DD afterwards as she is only 3)

The library near us seem to have lots of books that DS can read and do have some easy reader type books for younger kids, so it might be worth checking them out.

My DS is also a young child, his birthday is 31st Aug so I understand your concerns about them slipping back in the summer iyswim.

Thanks princessglitter Ds also reads about 99% of words in her books, unfamiliar ones she sounds out in herself really fast and then reads them aloud, she respect ( question marks, exclamation marks etc)
she is reasonably fluent and her comprehension is sound.
Her writing is very neat and very good, but I still don't understand why her reading level still 2, I can't help but think that maybe she should be stretched a little bit more.

I had the exact worries in reception (still do to a certain extent in yr1)

My DS always said the books were too easy

TBH I would leave it now as she will be re-assessed in yr1 anyway.

DS is now on level 9 and still complains they are too easy and he seems to understand all the words and answers the questions I ask him, but his teacher said he wants him reading a little bit more fluently/faster before going up a level which is fair enough.

That is great simpson wow level 9 that is really good, also good point, Ds will be reassessed in Y1.
Do you mine me asking on which level your children finished reception class?

dd is fairly unusual as she is reading level 7-9 (the books are banded, so she reads different levels) but this is not expected at all and to be honest I think her reception teacher feels it is an issue as her comprehension is not as good as her ability to decode. Most in her her class are on levels 1 to 3.

if the teaacher can give you a reason why your dc is reading that level then don't worry. it is not uncommon for children to go shy on the teacher. read at home. read books from the library or check out the book people as they have loads of sets of books on offer. try to get the phoonic based ones.

read to dc and model reading fluently with expression. that can take ages to come. good luck

DS finished reception on level 4.

There were only a handful of kids on the same level as him, the majority of them were on level 2 and a some were still on 1.

He got level 4 the week they broke up for the summer, then after the summer (in yr1) he was put back onto level 3 for a wk which I was a bit about tbh as I think his teacher was trying to say he had progressed more than he had over the whole of yr1 but tbh DS was happy so I was iyswim.

DS loves to read so the library has been a godsend and its saved me lots of £££ so thats always good

Meant mind that is still great level 7-9, I think personally, comprehension will catch up as the child matures.
I don't want to come across as a comparing type mum, I was just little concerned and fed up of Ds whinging oh "this is too easy"
