Reading level

I just wanted some opinion. I had a meeting with the teacher for my ds who was on a IEP 6 weeks ago for not being able to write properly. Basically you couldn't understand what he was writing and neither could he!

Anyway he has come on sooooo much and I am so pleased. She showed me a piece of writing that he did which he use capital letters, finger space and full stops. His choice of words was great too anyway I forgot to ask her what level he would be achieving for this but she said that he had hit his target and no longer needed to be on the IEP and will have his usual targets as the rest of the children.

So then we got onto his reading and she said that his reading level is 1a and that he he has gone up a stage in his reading books but on guided reading he is at 2c.

Now ds reads books at home random books and generally reada quite well. So what I would like to know is, is that good for his age he has only just turned 6 and will be finishing year 1 in 4 weeks time. Is there anything else for me to do with him?

He's doing very well if he's 2C

A 1a at the end of year one sounds on track. They are supposed to be a 2b by the end of year two (national average) and they can make two sub-levels a year.

Well done on great writing!

A tip for really helping their reading skills is their comprehension as they are sometimes tested on this at the end of year two. Asking lots of questions about the layout of books, author, vocabulary, characters etc.

Mrz that's for guided reading he is 2c and she said to me that often there is dispute with the books they take home, whether they are suitable for the child because of this new reading scheme they have for the colour coded levels.

Aniseed- I do that already ask about cover title etc...also ask about what happens in the story and tell me the story back.

He doesn't spell properly when he writes but you can understand what he has written. Is that ok?

In guided reading the teacher will be teaching reading skills and checking understanding he is doing very well to be 2C in Y1.

Oh really, wow I am really pleased then as underestimated him :( because he was on IEP but he seems to be doing well.
I'm sure I will be back on here once his report comes and has more things on it that I will be doubting!!

Ps I have a tutor for him at the moment only for support on his writing the reading side I do and for maths.
I am questioning myself whether or not I need her now?!?!?

Does he enjoy the sessions with the tutor or not? I think that's much of the answer...

Mrz - remind me, should a child be doing lower band, higher or same band books in guided reading compared to their take home books?

Dragonmother he really enjoys the tutor he gets more out of her than e does with me. He listens to her more than me an i get very frustrated.

I also have noticed ds reading books in the house and he has been reading them so well. The teacher said to me she is going to see how he goes with the books at school now I personally think e can read higher than what he is at.

Well, normally I'd say no to tutoring for this age group if they aren't struggling but if he's already doing it, enjoys it, benefits and has plenty of time to play and enjoy himself the rest of the week, then stick with it.
