Please explain SATS Scores to me - Year 3

Just received my Son's Report - he is on level 4C for Reading and Maths and 3B for Writing. What does this mean or can you provide a link to a website to explain?

The average child (nationally) should be:
Year 3 2a / 3c
year 4 3b
year 5 3a / 4c
Year 6 4a (aiming for level 5)
These are for the end of the year......

These are probably NC levels for teacher assessments, not SAT scores.

Average in Y3 is between a 2A and a 3C - so your son is doing very well.

hpsaucy, average/expected level at the end of Y6 is 4b. The rest is correct,

If the expected level is 4b and approx 35% get level 5 (according to last year's stats) then the average level would be 4a like hpsaucy said. Or is my brain not working properly?

Erm...yes, that's what I told you a couple of posts ago .

Hocuspontas, - the average level used to be 4b, then it became the expected level at Y6. 4a would be seen as achieving over and above expected levels for Y6.

When the scores used to refer to the 'average' child, it didn't mean mathematically, it meant the 'typical' child, iyswim.

Sorry I did appreciate your input Feenie, it's just other posters had different interpretations of the scores. Bit confusing - I wish school had provided the information. Thanks

Standardised Scores?? 126 and 127.

Well 2/3rds of kids get a score between 85 and 115. 100 is average. Anything above 115 is very good.

It is relatively easy to achieve a level 4 on the Y3 reading SATS and if you are a good mathematician, level 4 on the maths paper.
When I last taught Y3 5 years ago, around half the class scored 4c reading and a third got 4c maths. 3b writing is equivalent of end of Y4.
Interesting to see if the APP levels also gave a similar result.
