Books for 8 year old girl - suggestions please!

Hi All,

Can anyone give me some inspiration! I am looking for books for my 8 year old DD. Her fave books so far have been The Witches, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Lily Alone and Charlotte's Web.

We have bought a few from the book shop that she just hasn't got in to and I wondered if you could let me know of any booked you would recommend.

agree with the above,my dd has always been an avid reader & loves his books.She also liked (forgive me I cant remember the name) a whole series of fairy books (can be found in waterstones) the titles were something like "milly the flower fairy" or some such title but there is about a million of them (poss slight over-exageration) but she loved them.

My 8yr old DD has recently enjoyed:
Madame Pamplemousse and her Incredible Edibles by Rupert Kingfisher, Mr Stink by David Walliams, Journey to the River Sea by Eva Ibbotsen, Ballet Shoes by Noel Streatfeild, Twins of St Clares series by Enid Blyton, The Girl with the Broken Wing by Heather Dyer. Malorie Blackman's Operation Gadgetman.

Look forward to seeing others' recommendations as always on the look out for new titles for her.

DD2 (7yo) has just read through all the Williard Price adventures.
She read all the Little House books again this year, and When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit has stayed one of her favourite stories from when she read it a couple of years ago. She also reads almost any Enid Blytons, Elizabeth Goudge (I think Little White Horse is the only one still in publication, but there's other really good ones) Jacqueline Wilson and anything with Princess in the title.

How about some of the classics e.g. A Little Princess, Heidi, Peter Pan etc?

Jacqueline Wilson and Jeremy Strong are a firm favourite for my dd. She has also enjoyed Enid Blyton 'Naughty Amelia Jane', but I chose the book as I remember really enjoying it as a child.

I can recommend all the Roald Dahl books and all the Jacqueline Wilson books. Another good set is Anna Wilson's books, they are short stories about puppies, kittens e.t.c. The Rainbow fairies are good as well.

DD 7 nearly 8 enjoyed Charlottes Web, the Malory Towers & St Claires, and THe "little house" books.

She has read the younger Harry Potter books and enjoyed them too.

The How to Train Your Dragon series by Cressida Cowell. Brilliant.
The Septimus Heap series by Angie Sage (she is clearly a very advanced reader, BTW - my DD is 8 too and is reading this stuff)
Michael Buckley - Sisters Grimm series.
Harry Potter up to and including book 5
Lily Quench series

DD is 8 and in the last year has read and enjoyed the whole Harry Potter series, lots and lots of Jacqueline Wilson, quite a lot of Eva Ibbotson, the Madame Pamplemousse books, the Ottoline books, Clemency Pogue, lots of Michael Morpurgo, some Louis Sachar, a couple of Anthony Horowitz books (Granny etc), quite a few by Anne Fine, and the Molly Moon books by Georgia Bing. She also still rereads a lot of the Roald Dahl books (Matilda etc) and Dick King-Smith.

She also likes the Captain Underpants books, and most of the Roald Dahl.

Thank you very much for the suggestions they are very useful and have given me some fantastic ideas! I will be on amazon over the weekend placing some orders!

I am not sure why I was running out of ideas as there is clearly plenty of choice out there but the last couple of books we bought just didn't seem to work for dd. I really want her to enjoy her books and there are plenty here that sound great. Thanks again!

I can second Mr Stink by David Walliams - DD is reading it at the moment and today in school found that four other girls had started reading it. Even DH asked if we could book tickets for the stage production later in the year.

Mrsonthemove, we saw the stage production of mr stink recently - it was great! :)

magicmummy1 - do you think Mr Stink would be suitable for a 5yr old too? am thinking of taking both my dds.

My dd really liked the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series and also the Humphrey the Hamster books by Betty Birney. She is now reading the Little House on the Prairie which she also seems to enjoy.

My DD (9) loved The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman. She had read lots of the usual girly books & classic kids stuff & wanted something different. I also read it & really enjoyed it! Also try the Lemony Snickett books.

My DD (nearly 8) loves Diary of a Wimpy Kid and Horrid Henry - she just wont put them down, but showed very little interest in reading before hand!

Charlotte Sometimes by Penelope Farmer. One of my favourite books - haunting, memorable.

I would second 'how to train your dragon' too...great book!
