7 yr old DS reluctant writer

DS is a very good reader, good at maths and spelling but struggles with his writing. When I ask him why he doesn't like writing he says "its boring". Will he catch up or do you think I need to encourage him to do more writing at home? I don't think he would be very obliging at doing extra work at home and envisage lots of tears. He is going up to juniors in September and am worried he will struggle as they will expect him to do more writing.

My DS is 7 too and very bored when it comes to writing, however my other DS 8 was like this last year and is now thriving on the challenge of more writing in year 3 so I wouldn't worry I think it is a boy thing, DD 10 never went through it.

Also think it's a boy thing. Today wasn't yr2 DS's turn to go to the computer room so he was in the drawing group. He told me he chose to continue drawing rather than join the recorder playing session so I said to him 'ooh there'll be some lovely pictures coming home'. Apparently not! He is still on the first one which it turns out he printed off the computer so it only required colouring in

OR it might be that he has difficulties with writing and thats his way of saying he doesn't like it. What is his handwriting like? Has the teacher raised any concerns?

Another here who had the same problem-hated writing with a passion for a couple of years really.. used to 'refuse' to write in class but got over it and now writes stories at home 'for fun'. He's 9 now- we had a real problem between ages 6-8 really. Please be reassured - half his class (mainly boys) were the same.

My DS1 is exactly the same. Seems to resent writing anything at all - thank you letters in particular are actually a form of torture for parents I've decided! He's 7 and going up to Juniors in Sept as well.
I'm hoping it's a phase - the letters and cards we get from the girls in the class are a world apart from anything DS1 achieves.

I've got to say IMHE children who say writing is boring are usually the ones who find it difficult. In my class the best and most prolific writers are mainly boys.

His teacher hasn't raised any concerns. His writing is erratic, one day it can be quite good and the next day big and all over the place.

He is left handed, not sure if that makes it any harder for him?

DD used to have small issues with writing, she didn't not like it but had problems with not being able to see what she had written as her hand went over it (also left handed). Needed lines to ensure they were straight etc and letters were too small.
DS has SEN, so I'm used to him having literacy difficulties - I tend to see more the issues and possiblities from that. Although, not saying your DC has SEN, just that as mrz said, its quite common for children to have problems in that area.
When your DS is finding it hard, does he find it easier if he's copyng something? Does he understand what the task is, that he needs to complete etc. I'd ask the teacher maybe if they can review and if they could raise any concerns. I wouldn't worry too much about it at this stage, as long as you've brought it to the schools attention as well.
