Reading levels in year 1

My ds near end of stage 7 ORT and just wondered how this was in Year one. I know shouldn't compare and all that, but just wondered. I know he's in the 'bottom' group bless him although youngest in the class.

If he's in the bottom group on stage 7 ORT, it's a high standard in your ds's year. My Y1 ranges from stage 3 to stage 12 with most stages 5-8.

If that's the lowest level in the class, what on earth are the best readers on?
In our class I'd imagine that would be pretty average at the end of yr1. Is it a very academic private school?

Basically no need to worry if he is on ORT7 imho.

Thanks glad he is doing ok then . It is a state school but quite 'academic' I guess. I know he is in the 'group that gets a bit of extra literacy support' from a TA, but it seems to be really paying off. At the start of the year he couldn't read anything, and they were a little concerned. Good to see I shouldn't be too concerned then. He's nearly level 8, just a couple to go. His friends are on 10 or 9 as they were telling me the other day hmm.

DS is on level 9 (he is in top group) and the bottom group are on level 2/3 so I think level 7 is fab.

My Ds is also youngest in the class and I worry he keeps up but he seems to be flying atm

What the others have said; relative to his class he may not be top, but doing very well if you look at the ORT age/stage chart thingy.

My son is end of Yr 1 but oldest has just started stage 8 ( if thats purple ) and was on stage 7 for months.. I was told on parents evening he was top set but a sub group have now gone on to higher books and he and others aren't quite at that level yet.
I think you son is doing great and I wouldn't worry at all.

my dd is on level 10 and is one of the best in the class. level 7 is very respectable and he would deff be in top half of dd's class, the bottom group still being on stage 2 or 3.
but different schools use reading schemes in different ways so you cant really compaire school to school. if you look at the ort guide chart thing level 7 is y2 term 2, so according to that he is 2 terms ahead of average.

Level 7 ORT has a rough reading age of 6 years 6 months to 7 years so not bad for Y1.

DD's reception class has kids from level 1-9, I think 9 is quite high for Reception though. Level 7 from my experience of the books is fairly good going for yr1 so I really don't think you have anything to be worried about.
From what I've heard and seen, our yr1 lot are on anything from stage 3 to free readers.

Hi thanks for your replies, think they just have a lot of good readers in the class. Ta for replies, it's good to get some perspective on it when there's such a range. He seems to have clicked with it lately, wonder if that's why there is such a range at this age. maybe it's a time for reading 'clicking'. His class is the older intake with birthdays up to May-time so that may explain a bit.

Hurrah! A timely post. My DD2 has just been moved to stage 7 and although I am aware she reads quite easily I didn't know what that was compared to her age, so I am glad to have had my questions answered.

Sounds pretty good to me, must be a high achieving school. it sounds like he's just had that stage where it all clicks, so you could start to see quite rapid progress - reading tends to go in leaps. DD1 went from 1a books to stage 7 books in reception over the course of a week - I kid you not - based on what she was reading at home, it was quite scary - one week she was sounding out single syllable words, next week she was reading words like 'friendly' and dangerous'. I really have a lot of respect for the teachers who have to cope with all this!
