Year 2 - age 7 - How much time do you spend on homework ?

My daughter one of the oldest in the class recieved homework 3 times a week, normally one sheet, 1 spelling test/week and a reading book every other day.

The homework is very easy for her, takes her between 5-10 min / sheet, she reads 1-2 chapter(s) every night, that is another 10-15 min approx and she practises her spelling each day another 5 -10 min.

Some of the parents have complained to the school that this is not enough, but i think it is or maybe i totally out of touch with the level of homework for this year.

Would you please be able to give me an indecation how long your son/daughter in Year 2 spends on homework / extra school work ?

Spellings - approx 5 minutes night (10 words a week)
Reading - approx 15 minutse a night (school suggests you read at least 3 times a week)

School also sets "optional" homework each half term. There is a lot of suggested things to support the learning in school - you can do as many or as few as you want. Some people do nothing, or you could spend hours. I would say we probably do about 20-30 minutes each week. Sounds on par with your school.

I personally wouldn't want to do any more (though good that the school alllows for those that do). I tend to think that if people want their child to do more "homework" then they are better to focus on things they think their child needs more support in, than generic homework (e.g. when DS was struggling with number bonds we did a few minutes each night on this - at his request).

My DS is in yr2 and doesnt recieve any homework!

All the school require of them is to read their reading book, which they're given every day.
Once a term they are given a small project to work on, in which they are given about a month to complete it.

Sounds like i am not wrong thinking this is enough ... I am pleased - she really isn`t capable at doing it independant and it does take up a lot of time. One of the mums told me her daughter spends 45 each day - 7/week because she thinks it is important. I know everyone is different but i would love for my daughter to have a no homework policy ... @ shitmagnet - so lucky your soon is so keen on reading - wish mine one was - if any homework is good for them - i vote for reading!

Given once a week (Mondays) to hand in by following Monday. Usually couple of pages of literacy, couple of pages of numeracy OR one page literacy, one topic, two numeracy. Reading is supposed to be daily, but as dd now reads to herself its hard to assess can be loads one day, none the next.
We spend maybe half an hour on homework one night, ten minutes another, half an hour the next, maybe five another night -but then none at all for three nights as always finished by Thursday.

One piece of homework a week - which is usually literacy or numeracy. In Y1 there was no homework but she was supposed to read each night.

We probably spend 20 mins on homework most weeks, unless we forget!

None at all except reading books i KS1. As it should be.

This is my first post!

My kids are in Y1 and Y2 and have no formal homework at all though reading is encouraged every day. The head is very progressive and thinks they should be playing instead. Weird how I used to think this is what I wanted and now it's in place I feel a bit wobbly about it and rather wish for weekly spellings!

2x worksheets per week (very quick to complete) and one book per week. That's plenty in my opinion.

10 spellings handed out on Monday, for the test of Friday - so about 5 mins a night.

Maths sheet handed out on Friday, to be collected in on Monday - depends...probably about 15 mins.

Reading books - whenever he gets through the one he has. He is now on Chapter books and we read a few chapters morning & night, maybe 15 mins each.

I think this is quite enough

Not a lot, and certainly none at weekends or little "projects" to be completed during the holidays.

12 spellings, given on Monday, tested Friday;
Either a literacy or numeracy task, takes a few minutes;
reading daily, although TBH this often gets overlooked as DD always has her head in her own books. I do try to listen to her 2 times per week.

She also chooses to write her spelling words into sentences or a story which she hands in with her other homework on Friday. What I do practice with both of them though, preferably daily, is some mental maths, X tables or doubling/halving etc, only takes a few minutes, and DD2 is the sort of child who likes workbooks too.

my kids are in y4 and 6 and get virtually no homework. which is, imo, as it should be. these parents who think their kids are not getting enough should spend the time they'd like to spend on homework imparting a love of reading and learning in them. a love of and interest in nature, science, poetry, numbers, history, gardening, art. whatever rings your and their bell.

I have spoken with a mum from year 3 who informed me that they get 1 sheet each day + weekend homework and not handing it in on time recieves extra homework the next day - I am really not looking forward to this, specially as i my DD would love to do some "fun" activities next year as jazz dance and so - i guess not much i can do about that / hopefully she will become more independant as we move on (still if i don`t nagg her not much gets done @ present) (and i hate this by tha way).

As little as possible so as to have time to enjoy books and explore museums and libraries and parks etc etc

May be a tension with rankings/SATs obsessed HTs though...

at giving extra homework as a punishment. that's really going to give out the right messages.

DD is in year 2....shes the youngest and hates all homework.....she has a worksheet every night or a writing excersise...plus her reading book. We take about 30 minutes as she moans.

My year 2 DD reads anything between 15- 30 minutes a night.

She has 6 spellings a week to learn and is encouraged to write a short story using the words. That takes her about 6 minutes of actual writing and up to an hour of me telling her to sit back down and get on with it. sometimes spread over three days.

Yr2 aged 7 in Italy.

3-4 hours a night. Every night.

Bucharest. Do they have shorter days at school?

@ Bucharest - seriously ? My dd is home @ 3.30 - she goes to bed @ 7:30

• bathtime - dinner - playtime - ? OK i will never move to Italy - what do you do when you have several childeren to assist, also skip bedtime ? !

@ AurraSing - I know what you mean !! The effort goes into sitting them down, focus etc takes me far longer than the actual work - i am staring homework in 10 min and NOT looking forward to it ... 1 sheet of writing & spelling ... by the time that's done i had enough (and am i sure my dd feels the same!).

In our house DD gets 1 piece of English or 1 maths, spellings and reading each night. The maths or English can take anywhere between 10mins and 1 hour depending on task and mood of child!!!!

I'm sure there are plenty of willing 7 years olds and kids without younger siblings but that isn't our house!

I think I hate homework as much as DD if not more. DS had more than her this year and he's in reception!

P.s I however, do agree it has a part. Just wished I was more educated and better at getting my children to do it in a fun way.
