Reading Year Primary 2 Northern Ireland/ Year 1

Hi All, Can any one tell me what band reading book a child should be on at the end of primary 2 / Year 1. The school use a mix of Ribgy Star and ORT. I have just indirectly found out my ds is in the 3rd reading group, yet have been told at two parent teacher meetings his reading is fantastic. I would like to help him over the summer. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Surely the question you really want to ask is what can I do to help my DS with reading over the summer?

Or do you only want to help him if he is below average?

I really wanted to know where they should be by the end of year (ideally) so I can bench mark how much we need to do. While I am eager to help him get to that point, I also want to be careful I am no over burdening him. So I guess the anwer to both questions is yes.

Hi my dd is in scotland p2 and the average at the end of the year is ORT level 8/9 with lots of children above this and quite a few struggling.

Hey, thanks for the reply. In think Scotland, England and Wales P2 is the same as our P3 in Northern Ireland, tho, looking at this link for OTR books that would seem the case. I am thinking should be stage 5 for our P2 but not sure if that is the norm, can you shed any light at all? Thanks so much for replying:-)

By the end of Y1 in England it's normal for kids to be able to read a bit, but not to be able to read totally independently.

So most kids wouldn't able to read a chapter book by themselves (although obv some would) but they would be able to read quite a lot of words, and you would have noticed that their reading is significantly better than it was a year ago.

Going by book bands isn't all that reliable because teachers all choose when kids move up book bands differently.

Stage 5 is what the ORT site says is the norm. Certainly if they're stage 5 or above you don't need to worry at all. But if your child is below stage 5, but you still feel they can read more than 'cat sat on the mat', they're probably still doing fine.

Red flags at the end of Y1 is not knowing your alphabet.......

Thanks so much. My DS is on green Rigby Star, does that mean technically orange, turquoise and purple should still be completed in P2? Looking on the net I am nearly sure England's Y1 is the same as NI P2, all children here in P2 are six before the end of the school year. Thanks again for your help:-)

Green book band at the end of Y1 is totally fine and nothing at all to be concerned about.
