What is a compound word please?

ds is in y2 and part of his homework is to find compound words. I can't for the life of me understand his explanation. I don't really want to ask his teacher as she had to explain his homework to me last week.
Thinking I should maybe go back to school

Words made up of 2 or more other words.
EG:
News paper
Paper clip

scarecrow
saucepan
bedroom
snowball
gingerbread
football
bookend
etc etc

Two separate, independant words that join together make a new word, as the previous posters have listed.

Most of them can be split into two (freestanding) words as above, but occasionally you find one where one element exists only as a bound part of that compound word - like the "cran" part of "cranberry". But I don't think that level of detail will be expected in KS1!
