Hello all,

I have no idea where to start when it comes to Primary Schools for my little boy. He's just about to turn three, and some school websites say to apply when they are three.

It feels really early but I dont want him to miss out.

Can anyone tell me the process I would really appreciate it!

Also - do you have to tell the schools if they are first/second choice etc??

xx

Assuming you are in England you will apply by mid-January for a place in Reception in September 2012. You apply through your local authority even if you are applying for a place at a school in another local authority's area. You do not apply to individual schools and you certainly shouldn't tell the schools if they are first or second choice.

You should find plenty of information on your local authority's website under "school admissions" or similar.

Start by finding out the schools, ring the Head and arrange a visit.

Visiting schools is a good idea but please note that you cannot put your name down for a school and guarantee a place. That isn't how the system works.

I would also advise you to be very wary of anything they say about the admissions process. The schools themselves have little or no involvement in the process and frequently give poor advice, the most common being to tell parents that they won't get in unless they make the school their first choice.

Definitely look at your local authority's website.

Schools are still dealing with 2011 admissions, 2012 admissions process starts in september in most areas, this is when you will be able to visit schools, and apply, the deadlines for applications are generally end of january.

The website probably say apply at three because most of the children that start school next year will 3 this september.

Your school choices will be put on the application to your local authority, you wont have to deal with the school until you know what school your ds has a place in.
