Dan the Dunce- is this an inappropriate reading book?

Would you be if your child brought this book home from school as their reading book ? (I know it is a traditional tale and all but..?). What should I write in the reading record book? Dd is 5 and in y1- had to explain what a dunce was.

Not familiar with the book, so not sure if this is your only gripe, but DS studied the Victorians in Y1, so was at that age familiar with the idea of what a "dunce" was.

I wouldn't be I'd be I think the school shouldn't be using reading books that label less able (special needs?) children.
