What songs did you sing at Primary School?

I don't mean playground songs, I mean the sort of thing you'd sing as a class?

This morning I was trying to remember the words to In the Fields in Frost and Snow, and wikkied them here

In the Fields in Frost and Snows,
Watching late and early;
There I keep my Father's Cows,
There I Milk 'em Yearly:
Booing here, Booing there,
Here a Boo, there a Boo, every where a Boo,
We defy all Care and Strife,
In a Charming Country-Life.

Obviously a kind of old version of Old Macdonald. I went to school in the 60's we also sang one about a tiger 'prowling round the forest while the nights were dark and wild' and 'Bessie was a Black cat as old as the house'.

And one which went

'The ladybird and the centipede got married,
the ladybird and the centipede they wed,
on their wedding night I've heard it said,
fifty one pairs of slippers were by their bed,
the ladybird and the centipede - something something (forgotten)'

My headmaster was a great pianist and loved music, and we had singing everyday first thing, and entered lots of festivals etc. I loved it.

Does anyone else have any favourites they remember?

We used to listen to 'Singing Together' on the radio once a week. Songs like "Marie's Wedding,' 'Cuckaburra(sp?)', 'Fire Down Below' - loved the songs, but didn't like the (male) teacher stalking between the desks brandishing his cane, barking 'Sing!' at he disruptive boys pupils.

All Things Bright and Beautiful (C of E school)...
I loved it so much I walked down the aisle to it at my wedding.

Also really liked the hymns 'When a Knight Won His Spurs' and 'Think of a World without any Flowers@

My favourite song at Primary School was 'There's a hole in my bucket'.

Mhari's wedding I loved - beautiful song, and The Skye Boat song. My DH sang 'Three Craws' Giraffes

When a Knight won his Spurs was a favourite hymn of mine too. And one called 'Wide,wide as the Ocean'

Kookaburra and Kum By Yah (and ging gang gooly) we used to sing at Brownies. (And 'We're riding along on the Crest of the Wave' - with actions)

We sang something, which I think was probably from sing together or similar which went 'Will you come to my castle matta rilly rilly rilly, wil you come to my castle matta rilly rilly ron' - google hasn't heard of it, but I don't think I've made it up

sing hosanna. we all used to change the words to "sing banana"

i always loved the Harvest Festival song.....

Also, there was one called "Water of Life" and it was to the tune of Rupert the bear. All the "naughty boys" used to sing "There's Rupert, Rupert the Bear, Jesus Gives us Rupert the Bear" instead of "Jesus Gives us Water of Life". I used to join in, but then used to pray to God not to strike me down for blasphemy and that I hoped he understood that I had to sing those words to make X (boy in my class) like me

God I really need therapy don't I?

Anyone remember "The Golden Cockerel" and "The Ink is Black" or "I am Hungry" and "Do Your Ears Hang Low" and "With my Hands on Myself"

We also had 'Raindrops are our diamonds' - which is quite sweet.

We also sang 'I'm off to Dublin in the Green' - which was a bit odd for a south west England primary -, but they changed 'IRA' to 'army' in the version we sang and

all things bright and beautiful and in the playground when suzie was a baby we loved that as the words were a bit naughty :-)

I remember the "ink is black the page is white" and "Botany bay"

It looks like a Purple People Eater to me!

My primary school 'anthem' was One More Step Along the World I Go.
