Placing Requests in Glasgow

A pretty large group of parents at my DS's primary school (Mount Vernon) have had their placing requests for siblings refused. Now, I know that requests for siblings are not guaranteed, but this seems abnormal and we can't find anybody who remembers this ever happening before. A lot of schools have cut their intake due to the new class size limits, and I am wondering if any of you know of any other schools in Glasgow where this is also happening. It would help us to know if this is how it is right across the board, or if we got very very unlucky. None of the other primaries around us have turned away siblings AFAIK.

I am guessing there are these out of catchment siblings? As there is a cap on p1 class sizes (25) this year many schools are full up of catchment children and there is just no space for any out of catchment requests, siblings or not. It has happened for this very reason at many Edinburgh schools this year.

On the south side area where I live everyone has had their placement request accepted. Must admit that I was surprised when three of my friends got into a popular school in shawlands.

I don't know about the situation in mount vernon but it might be because of the 25 child rule. Are there any new housing estates within the catchment area? Must be tricky having kids in separate schools. Are they far apart?

Oh and none of the kids I know got in on the sibling rule as they are all first borns. Would have thought that out of catchment siblings would have priority over out of catchment non-siblings. Has anyone asked the council for a breakdown of the categories of the successful applicants? Know you can do this in England but not sure about Scotland.

That's interesting news about Edinburgh (although a bit depressing), and a good tip to ask the Council for a breakdown of applicants. I will follow that up. Thanks! It is partly the 25 child rule that is causing this, although there are a couple of other factors have massively amplified the effect, so that the usual intake has basically been cut in half. We are putting into place a Plan B if a joint parental appeal doesn't go through. But it is such a horrible decision: do we put them in two separate schools (and I don't know how that works) or pull the DS and put them both into a new school?

This is a link to my petition www.scottish.parliament.uk/GettingInvolved/Petitions/p1eighteen I am fighting the sibling case for placing requests after going through pure turmoil over my middle child being rejected after the first one was granted one in Glasgow. Please sign and if you look into the Glasgow Herald Education section you will find all of the articles about my campaign.
