stickers and certificates

I've seen it mentioned a few times that people don't approve of stickers and certificates as rewards. Can anyone explain why?

My Y2 DD got a certificate recently, which praised her leadership and initiative.
Unfortunately she didn't know what initiative meant and wasn't clear how she had shown leadership - so a bit of a waste of time in terms of reinforcing any particular behaviour.
It did make her very, very happy though.
