distance from primary schools.... how do you calculate?

How can I find out exactly how far my home is from the school? I am not from england and am finding the issues getting into oversubscribed nursery and primary schools in London a bit daunting. It seems you have to live so close to the school!!! I am close to a few, but how do I find out exactly how close I am to see if I will have a decent chance of getting in?

is there some website that calculates this?

My london borough will tell you if you ring the school admissions dapartment -I don't know if they all offer this service, but you could try.

Usually the lea will tell you, but for a rough idea, I think it's as the crow flies, not by any actually travellable distance. Is for us anyway.

Your local LEA website may well have an application that will do this for you - ours does (surrey).

You need to check with your local authority about the specific school that you are interesetd in because different admission authorities use different criteria, some are straight line distance, some are shortest walking route.

yes the distance is calculated 'as the crow flies'.... but how do you calculate this?

Not designed with it in mind but this site will do it for you

mamaesi, depending on where you are you really need tp contact your council to find out what softwear they use - some of the schools round here you need to live within 0.2 miles of the front door, and it goes on how they work it out, not how you work it out.

Surrey have it on their website

mamaesi · 23/03/2011 21:25

Ok so I have started to try to figure out the distances....

It seems that I am 0.5 to 0.7 from all of the schools in my area...

yet the schools say you have to be 0.2 or 0.3 in order to get in.

so where will my child go to school???

what if I can't get into any of them! I am so confused

have you done it from the post code? you need the exact position of your and the schools front door

The LA will be using a computer system which gives a very accurate measurement. Anything you get from other sources is likely to be less accurate and, in any case, the LA's computer system gives the definitive answer (unless there is some obvious mistake such as measuring from the wrong house). Ask the LA.

As a general guide, where do the other children in your street go to school?
