Has anyone got any tips on helping dcs in year 1 to memorise their times tables, or is it just a case of lots of practice. 2s, 5s, 10s and 11s all fine but others need a lot of thinking about.

Another tip for the nine times table:
spread out both hands so ten fingers pointing out
for 9 multiplied by 3 (9 times 3) bend over the third finger from the left
you are left with two fingers to the left still showing, these are your tens so "twenty"
you then have seven fingers to the right still visible, these are your units so "seven"
answer 27
try it- it is easy to do than explain
this method works for up to 10 times 9

this might help: to multiply by 5 you multiply by 10 and halve your answer

you can make up rhymes to help with the hardest ones (6X7, 6X8 and 7X8 are the trickiest in my opinion)

I am a senior school teacher and a few of my Y7 students still struggle with times tables.

Oops, cross post with snorkie as I took so long typing.

don't forget at the great patterns for multiplying by a two digit number by 11

eg 25 X 11 is 275 (the sum of 2 and 5 ie 7 is inserted between the digits)

works as long as the digits add up to 9 or less

Percy Parker is by no means boring - they are fun and catchy songs.

Also CDs can be useful in the car when you have a captive audience!

We use audio CDs every bedtime, and wouldn't do a straight "learning" one then as it is supposed to be pleasurable. Usually it is stories. But my children often request Percy Parker as it is so nice.

I agree my class sing the songs in the playground so they must find them fun

I stand corrected, all the ones that I came across were just like chanting for hours on end - haven't seen the Percy Parker ones

If you look at the itunes link you can hear snippits

In the story that goes with Percy Parker he is an 84 year old retired teacher with his own band
