Help with Year 3 maths homework - Venn diagram

We have a Venn diagram with 2 overlapping sets with various numbers in them. The question asks for the description of the qualities in each set (so eg multiples of 5, or even numbers.

In one oval the numbers are 150, 72, 60 and 99
In second oval the numbers are 11, 23, 49 and 4
In the intersection are 9, 36, 42 and 18
Outside both sets are 67 and 62.

Any ideas as to the descriptions for each set? I can see that the numbers in the intersection are multiples of 3, but that is all.

Am I missing the obvious?

Hmm, in the first oval, the numbers are multiples of 3 as well. I can't see what the pattern is in the second oval!

claricebeansmum · 10/03/2011 19:13

I agree with MaryBS

In fact at the intersection they are also multiples of 3

AbigailS · 10/03/2011 19:20

It's late, I've had a migraine and there is recorder practise going on, but I think...
one oval is multiples of 3, the other is numbers less than 50 ????

Ladymuck · 10/03/2011 19:22

Abigail - that's it!

Blooming obvious when I look back at the previous question. But I assumed that I'd be up to Year 3 maths without having to do so.

how is 4 a multiple of 3

9 18 36 42 60 72 99 150 multiple of 3

4 9 11 18 23 36 42 49 ??

really cant see a pattern

hocuspontas · 10/03/2011 19:24

No, I still don't get it...

hocuspontas · 10/03/2011 19:25

Oh good. Not the only one!

AbigailS · 10/03/2011 19:25

Second oval (not in the overlapping section) is just numbers smaller than 50.

claricebeansmum · 10/03/2011 19:26

4 is not a multiple of 3 but it's not in the multiple of 3 circle....

claricebeansmum · 10/03/2011 19:27

AbigailS

Yes - all the numbers in the second oval - includiong the intersection are less than 50!

hocuspontas · 10/03/2011 19:28

But what's that got to do with the first oval?

hocuspontas · 10/03/2011 19:30

Oh yes I see!

All the numbers in the 1st oval are multiples of 3. All the numbers in the 2nd oval are less than 50.
All the numbers in the overlap are multiples of 3 and are under 50.
All the outsiders are over 50 and not multiples of 3.

Phew!

I find Venn diagrams bizarre! Has anyone used them in real life? There must be some use or they wouldn?t be on the curriculum. Not surprising parents find this confusing.
I've just spent two lessons teaching them to my Year 2s like this ...
First oval is for cats. Second oval is for black animals. Intersection is for animals that are BOTH a cat and black. So a black dog, fish, rabbit, etc. goes in the black oval, but not the intersecting bit. Tabby cats, grey cats, etc. go in the cats oval, but not the intersecting bit. Only black cats can go in the intersecting bit. Outside any of the ovals go anything that doesn't fit either the black criteria or the cat criteria.
We did it practically with skipping rope ovals and toys, pictures and even children moving to the correct section.

they are used in all aspects of education as AbigailS say's why do we use them i guess good for children who need teaching to be more visual?

I love Venn Diagrams.

I also love graphs.

And pivot tables.

Venn diagrams are good for demonstrating how things are categorised. All Mondeos are Fords, but not all Fords are Mondeos (for example).

I guess this has applications across all areas from biology to relational databases.

My DCs love Venn diagrams - we have some books called Venn Perplexors, which are really good. You have to work out the categories on some of those - DS1's book has some really tricky ones!
