World Book Day costume inspiration sought.... desparately please!

DS is in Yr 1 and WBD is looming. I am NOT good with needle and thread, and my creativity is a little stunted.

Any ideas?? Please?

He is not a very loud, brave boy and was extremely reluctant last year to dress up, though this year he is lots more confident.

I had to read that one to him at bedtime tonight!! I had suggested he and his friend go as Thing 1 and Thing 2 but he was not keen on the idea of blue hair! Maybe he could go as Sally's brother.....

We are doing harry and the bucket ful of dinosaurs-easy no costume required only an bucket and some toy dinosaurs!

For the last few weeks I've had to read to DS How to Catch a Star. The character is A Boy! Simple

My DS went as the cat from Pumpkin soup last year as it was a book he loves. Just made a cat mask from card and stuck some pumpkin pictures on a plastic bowl and gave him a spoon. Dressed him in grey t-shirt and trousers.

Does he like Beast Quest books? If you have a shield in your dressing up box could stick some of the symbols on and go as Tom.

Another great look from last year was Willy Wonka, doesn't require much effort but you do need some props The boy had a purple jacket (mum's?), one of those giant lollipops, a big hat (could make of card) and sweet wrappers had been stuck all over him (good excuse to scoff a box of Roses).

DS1 has been as Henry VIII (Loves Tudor history books) and Sir Gadabout (worst knight in the world). This year he is going as Reepicheep the mouse from Narnia.
DS2 is in nursery this year he is going as a butterfly - not the 'obvious' butterfly from the Hungry Caterpillar, but a butterfly from the pictures in the Gruffalo! DS3 is going to dress up as the mouse from the Gruffalo for playgroup.

My ds is going as Charlie Bucket. He's got a crumpled up shirt, a very 70s tank top from ebay, trousers which are too short for him and a big golden ticket..easy

We did Asterix last year. Red trousers, plain dark green t-shirt a couple of sizes too big (you can eventually use it as just a t-shirt when they grow a bit) for a tunic with a belt and a wooden dagger (available in the shops at any English Heritage place). And a viking helmet with "wings" attached to the horns.

This year is Dennis the Menace. ds's red and black stripy t-shirt paired with his black football shorts and red and black football socks. Add a home made twig-catapult, crossed over plaster for his knee and some hair gel and black coloured hairspray and it's a resonably effective Dennis.

I nearly did Where's Wally? as I've got a red and white striped jumper. Couldn't find a red and white bobble hat to go with it though. I'll plan ahead and look for the hat in winter next year!

DD went as Paddington last year - easy if your dc has a duffle coat, we borrowed a vaguely suitable hat and accessorised with a large box with 'MARMALADE SANDWICHES' written on it for dd to carry.

This year dd is going as the wolf from Red Riding Hood in my fake fur jacket with whiskers drawn on in eyeliner pencil (her plan)

Mouse is good if your ds has brown trousers & t shirt - again add whiskers/nose in eyeliner pencil, cardboard cut out hazelnut to carry - you have Town mouse or Country mouse as you prefer

DS is going as the character from 'the Night Pirates' simply cos it's a boy and we have pirate stuff.

Look at what dress up clothes you already have then try desperately to think if there is a nurse/fairy/princess in any of her favourite books. Then go a bit crazy with the makeup! Works a treat x

ds going as funnybones , got skeleton outfit from halloween with red bowler hat , dd going as tinkerbell

DD is in Yr 1 and is going as Harriet the Hamster Fairy. We chose by getting out a big pile of her favourite books (ie Rainbow Fairies), spreading them over the floor then looking at the pictures on the cover to see which outfit could most easily be put together/she was prepared to wear.

mine want to be Harry Potter and Hermione - we only decided tonight so i think i will be busy tomorrow

Horrid Henry. Just a striped top and messy hair with a grubby face. When DS did it I printed out a horrid henry logo and made it into a badge.

DS is a bit older - year 5 - but is going as the kid from Diary of a Wimpy Kid. Jeans, t-shirt and hoodie type top. Fine by me!!!

I have to dress up for work in a nursery so am going as Wendy from Bob the Builder just as a have a green tshirt, jeans and my dd has a hard hat I can use.

Percy the park keeper? - shirt, trousers,gillet, flat cap and wellies.

Love your idea mydeargirl! Will use that for DSs in the future!
