Reading in reception, teacher finally moves her down a level

Finally. had parents evening and they told me they had just decided to move her back down a level.
She only started school in jan, and was unable to read, and they were sending her home with ORT level 2b stuff, which was, quite frankly ridiclous.

But then the teacher said seeing as DD knows all her letters and sounds, and is doing so well she is going to start doing some level 3 work with her.

So - whats that then??

Having a similar issue with my Reception DD. Despite her being largely unable to read the books at the book band she was on, she has just been moved up a book band. (in fairness teacher did suggest we picked the "easier" books within the band).

In some ways it has worked - DD was bored silly by the really simple stories and welcomes the slightly more interesting text. Because I think they are too hard for her, I make her pick out the words I think she knows and sound out a few others and just tell her the rest. She does seem to enjoy it more this way, so I guess this is a positive, but do wonder about the logic?

Thats what i was doing, but it was stupid. the teacher said she thought DD might recognise the shape of some of the words.
Thing is there was too many in the book for her to memorise them and learn them that way, and she doenst really have the skill to sound them out yet.. or not when its sounding out almost every word.

Im pleased becuase the last book we had was just stupidly hard for her. There is pushing her,and pushing her to hard i think

By "level 3" she might have meant phase 3 of phonics.
