How would your yr 5 child work out this sum:
5167.5 divided by 32.5

Really struggling to keep calm with DD who (as usual) is trying to cram in her homework at the last minute.
Just don't get half the methods they teach, seem so long winded

While typing she has come up with right answer but just cannot understand her logic. Homework always seems such a battle, think I hate it more than she does.
Next question:
In a motor race the winning car travels 231 miles in 2 hours 45 mins, what is its average speed miles per hour?

My brain is currently travelling at zero miles per hour if that helps

2 hours 45 mins is 2.75 hours, so divide 231 by 2.75 (=84)

I would split that one into 11 quarters of an hour ie 2x4 plus 3 then multiply that answer by 4 to get miles per hour. So 21 x 4 = 84 miles per hour. No idea if that is how it is supposed to be done though.

It is hopefully a calculator question!

Dividing decimals by decimals normally only appears in calculator papers even in year 6.

If this is the calculation you have come up with from a word problem then use a calculator. The question prob wanted to work out if you could figure out which calculation to use!
