what should my DS be able to do before starting reception in sept 2011 ?

Hi, a quick question to all parents of primary school children.

My DS will be starting reception in Sept 2011.

What should my DS be able to do by himself in readiness ?

He is already toilet trained, but still gets me to wipe his bottom so I guess wiping hiw own bottom needs addressing.

He can dress himself pretty much, buttons and all.

Does he need to be able to write his own name and things like that ? We asked at his pre-school and they said no, that the school have their own ways of teaching these things and they don't like parents teaching it ?

my DD also starts reception in september so I am keeping my eye out for threads like these all the time!

Hadn't thought about things like peeling his own banana etc, will make sure he can do those things too.

Been helping out in reception class this morning and the distance between the abilities of least capable to most capable is huge. Your Lo would be one of the more capable at the level he's at now with regards to general self care. :)

My DD is currently in reception - there is a huge range of abilities - I bought some early learning type activity books before she started with numbers and pencil skills. But she is a child who relished these activities and really wanted to copy Big sister. I know not all children are interested. Try
Learning Supplies for these and other fun early learning stuff as they tend to be reasonably priced.

Don't worry though, they all soon find their feet!!
