Another reading question (Reception)

DTDs have been having reading books since the start of this term. They get a new one every day, which they like, as they're reading them fairly easily. So far we've been having Ginn books, but today DTD2 has brought a Rigby Star. They seem a similar level - Rigby Star is slightly longer, but that's it. I was surprised though, as I assumed the school would choose one reading scheme and stick to it. Is it normal to mix them up? Just wondering if anyone can share their experiences, really. Not worried - both girls are doing well with their reading, and I'm glad to be having a break from "Sam wanted a balloon..." "Rosie wanted a balloon".

Always better to use lots of different schemes so children can see that they can read anything - I have had children refuse to try another scheme as they think they wont be able to read it -they are then amazed when they see the same words in both books! Also, different styles suit different children and ones who are really struggling with one style may suddenly blossom just from having a different type of book.

Very normal. The books will be banded and each band will usually contain some Ginn, some ORT etc.

It's important that children,
a)See text in lots of different formats and styles. Different schemes help this.
b)Are given the opportunity to be extended sideways rather than rush through one level. Consolidation is really important at this stage. HTH

On a very basic level, it also helps prevent children from finding reading 'boring'. I am bored reading the same scheme over and over. I certainly wouldn't want to inflict it upon an emergent reader.

Ours have books from all sorts of schemes, they just take one that has the right colour band on it (banded by the school).

Yes, we have books from lots of different schemes coming home.
