My youngest sons Primary school are only doing 5 weeks summer holidays this year. Going by the council website, 2012 has us going back on 31 August. Is this the start of us losing our lovely long summer break?? :(

I didn't think they could start a new term on August 31st as contracts generally run from 31st August to 1st September. If a teacher moves from one school to another, it could cause real problems with contracts.

I don't know!! But I do think teachers need a long break just as much as the children!!

Unfortunately we can go back on 31st August we did this school year, staff back in 31st kids in 1st. Next school year we are back 1st September.

Have you checked the school's own inset days? There might be one or two at the beginning of term - we do, so the dc don't go back til the following Tuesday.

Are you in Leicestershire? They have always gone back in August as they break up early.

We had 7 last year & 5 the year before. Seems to even out.

We "only" have 5.5 weeks summer hols. BUT we get 2 weeks off in the Autumn half term and it is fabulous! We can go away for a break in the autumn and not have to pay a fortune for it as for one of the weeks nto everyone is off as well.

schoolsecretary - are those the dates as published by county, or did your headteacher make a decision to put the teacher training day in on 31st August?

Thanks for all your feedback. I got the info from the council website and shall check with the Head tomorrow, to see if she's adding on inset days!
