Any teachers able to tell me why my ds (Y1) was sent home yesterday with books a level below those he was reading end last term and beginning of this one? Could it be to do with the typeface in one of them which is a bit funkier than ORT? Can he have gone backwards?

Thank you marniesmummy - but why? Blush

This has happened to DD too this week... I almost (but wimped out) wrote in her book

"Here is a book.
Can you see the book?
DD can read.
Look, DD is reading the book.
DD has read the book."

...but that would probably be taking sarcasm too far?

She is free reading at home btw...

I love you Seeker.

seeker- probably because your common sense approach to most topics sets us on the straight and narrow once more when we're being too precious!

'You can't unlearn to read" - a perfect post; brief, to the point, reassuring, slightly cheeky without a hint of condescension or sarcasm.

You're one of mn's unsung heroes (not that we always see eye-to-eye on some issues).

Aw- this turned into a seeker love-fest! Grin

Why on earth don't publishers realign their stages to make them the same as bookbands?

mrz · 21/01/2011 19:24

publishers have but schools can't afford to replace whole reading schemes purchased pre book banding system

mrz · 21/01/2011 19:25

which is why so many schools are still using ORT and Ginn360

stoatsrevenge · 21/01/2011 22:22

One of the Cliff Moon Bands (green or blue?) incorporates stage 3 and 4 ORT books (blue and red spine). (Think it's green!)

Thank goodness you wimped out of that one Capt Nancy! Personally, I would have held it against you for the rest of the year! Grin

Lots of the Book Band colours incorporate ORT/Ginn books from 2 or more stages. I really wouldn't worry!

Your ds may have reached a plateu and next set of books been too difficult, so teacher revisiting previous level to give him chance to build up fluency and confidence. Have taught Y1 for 10 yrs and this sometimes happens. Perhaps he's not using all his phonics and still too reliant on sounding out?

curtaincall · 24/01/2011 15:54

Since I last posted, he's gone up another level to two above the one mentioned. The books have different stories in them and are a lot longer. He does seem to be a pretty fluent reader but he needs to practise his reading with expression as he starts with gusto and ends up barely whispering.
