Formative assessment is sometimes referred to as Assessment for Learning and Summative as Assessment of Learning.
Formative is very much about the day to day judgements teachers make on what a child needs to be taught to make progress whereas Summative measures what they know at a certain point end of year tests exams for example

Formative assessment is the assessment teachers use all the time, in our day to day teaching - i.e. can these children do such and such?

Summative assessment is more formal assessment, say at the end of a unit, or a year, or SATs.
