what would you do?

from reading various threads on here im thinking that my son isnt getting enough from his reception class..... i just need another perspective on whether i need to speak to the teacher or anything please

i think shes pretty rigidly following letters and sounds as theyve only just started phonics... they spent ages on listening walks and phonological awareness etc.... it just all seems SO slow..... not all of the sounds have been covered yet... no words home.. no tricky words introduced and only WORDLESS PICTURE BOOKS..... last time his wordless picture book was changed was dec 9th....

am i worrying for no reason? is this fine ?

They wouldn't have covered all of the sounds yet, so don't worry about that. However, I would ask her re changing the books and how often. It does seem a little odd to not change the book since Dec 9th. Just have a pleasant (constructive!) chat with her (after school probably).
Have you seen Mr Thorne's phonics videos on You Tube? They are lovely. Found out about on the Times site, and my son loves them. he is a primary school teacher himself.

Don't worry too much - but no harm in chat, I'd say.

I don't think there is a great deal you can do if this is the way the school works but IMHO lots of teachers are wrongly getting hung up on teaching Phase 1 of L&S first when it is intended to run alongside all other phases. In the long term it shouldn't be a problem as your son is still young.

I don't think you should worry. My DTDs are in Yr R, and I was discussing what they're up to with two freinds yesterday evening who each have a set of DTDs at different schools (so 3 schools IYSWIM) and they're all doing it differently, despite being in the same town. My girls have got further through phonics that the others (they've got as far as "sh", "ch" and "th" whilst the others are still on single letters) but the other two have had reading books sent home whilst we haven't had any at all. We have had word lists of words with 3 and 4 letters (this week included "camp" and "kick") whilst the others say that the reading books only include 3-letter cvc words.

It's only the start of the second term - try not to let it bother you at the moment.
