Confused about primary school KS2 results

Hi there

I wonder if someone could help. We are looking at primary schools for our DS for Sept 2011.

The school we are likely to get into has just had their results published. Whilst their maths and english results have gone down their CVA score has gone up?

Level 4 English 89% (2010), 100% (2009)
level 4 Maths 71% (2010), 96% (2009)
Av points 28.6 (2010), 29.5 (2009)
CVA 101.4 (2010), 100.9 (2009)
Progress KS1-KS2 English 96%(2010),97% 2009)
Progress KS1-KS2 Maths 81%(2010), 97%(2009)

If the CVA measures the progress between KS1 and KS2 then surely the CVA score should have gone down in line with the results?

Any help much appreciated!

No because what it actually means is those children attained lower in ks1 and therefore were expected to attain less in ks2. They did this but as they iwill have met their targets, as expected then the CVA will go up.

Each cohort of children comes in with different abilities and differing numbers of really bright children/average children/those who will not achieve national average/those with SEN etc etc...so what happens one year in terms of actual results in maths and english can differ hugely the next year because the cohort of children just collectively had different ability levels. So if the school has gone up in terms of CVA then that is great because it means it took in some children and added significant value to their eventual outcomes even if that means they didn't actually perform as well as last year's cohort. So high CVA is very important.
