How many sick days off school has your dc had already?

Since starting reception this year my dd keeps getting all sorts of bugs and illness (and infecting me and dh too, and we reinfect her!). I think she has has 10 days off already.

I know this is high number off days to be ill and am worried the school will get mad, but I cant send my child in ill and its getting me a little stressed out.How many days off has you little one had off? Is this normal in reception due to the new exposure to bugs etc?

Yes it's normal in reception.

If school have any concerns they will talk to you.

Don't stress about it.

(And don't take any holidays during term time :) )

Seven days so far and ill at home at present. At the moment considering whether to take her to school tomorrow or not. She has no fever, eats well, but feels tired and her nose is streaming. Without me reminding her every three minutes to blow her nose, she won't, with snot streaming down her face or conveniently wiped away with her sleeve. I can hardly expect her teacher to remind her all the time (teacher has 25 children to look after).

4 days so far (would have been 8 but way illnesses have fallen with weekends has helped).

Don't worry, even if you get the standard bollox letter. If they are ill, they are ill. Much worse is to send your lo to school when they've been up half the night vomiting, as one dp in our class is wont to do.

2 youngest only had 1 day of as they had an inset day.

Two days - the day before half-term she caught the dreaded pox and today (I am not driving in the snow!)

I feel it is really unfair that there is no distinction made between illness and unauthorised absence or lateness. The child is just marked absent.

I had an issue with the school earlier on this year as there was a big idea to introduce a traffic light system - issuing green, red and yellow letters to the pupils. Children who had genuine issues were punished along with those who took time off for holidays - and it was done openly so all the children could see who had got what colour letter. Appalling !!

It gets a bit better as they get older ime.

Not much this year but when oldest dd was in reception she was off loads. Just seemed to pick everything up. Don't worry.

But one of older dd's never made a full week for 3 years - then they took her tonsils out and barely ill for remainder of school years

None, but they are unusual I think. They are never ill (famous last words...)

dd1 - 1.5 days due to vomiting - she is in Yr 7 though - I have already been told that her attendance is borderline with 1.5 days absence!

dd2 - 4 - she has severe SN, is very thin and can't throw bugs off quickly. Her special school luckily don't have a strict attendance policy.

I'd really send her in if she's just tired with a runny nose!

DS had no days off at all in Reception (he did have chicken pox that year but helpfully timed it for the start of the Easter holidays) and has had one day off so far in Y1. But then he was at FT nursery before that, and he had a LOT of time off sick his first year at nursery.

Dd has had 7 days off with a really nasty virus would have been 8 had one of them not been an inset day.Last year she only had two days off all year so this is high for her. I'm sure schools realise when absence is due to illness rather than skiving tbh

DD is in year 1 and has had 1 day off so far this year, due to a vomitting & diarrohea bug. Probably would have been longer, if it hadn't started on a Thursday night, but luckily she had the weekend to recover!

I would always send dd to school if she's well enough, and she's usually dying to get in as well, but sometimes they're just not up to it, and they need to be at home. If your dd is unfortunate enough to have been sick a bit more often than most, there's no need for you to feel guilty about this at all - it wouldn't be fair to send her in when she's not well, and it wouldn't be fair to the other kids either. Have a word with the teacher if you're worried, but don't beat yourself up about it - you're doing the right thing.

ds has had 12 days. 10 days for impetigo! 1 for a vomiting thing and 1 for a cough, oh anhe didn't go to school in the snow on monday

you don't keep a kid with a cold but no fever off
