PE outside in -1!

My DS, year 4 has just told me that yesterday they did PE outside, wearing only their PE kits (shorts, t-shirts and plimsoles), while the teacher stood there in her coat, hat, gloves etc.

Apparently, after they said they were cold, they were allowed to put on their hats.

Now, I'm not a one for mollycoddling my kids, but it was -1 all day here yesterday!

m I right in thinking this was stupid and on the verge of cruel? How do I handle this with the teacher who is otherwise wonderful.

I wouldn't have a class outside doing PE in this weather - too bloody cold for ME! Never mind the kids!!! :D

Whenever I've been in schools doing outdoor PE - they either have tracksuits or I make them put their jumper and coats back on and I do a lot of running around type games to keep them warm - but even I would have cracked and stayed in the warm yesterday!

Ds aged 10 plays football outside, their limit is -5. BUT they wear tracksuits, hats and gloves. Being underdressed in those conditions can be dangerous when they come back into the warm. Not acceptable imo

Well Euphemia - I would like to see you running around outside with only shorts and a t-shirt on when its minus 1 !!!

Def too cold in my opinion - they should definately have had more clothes on!!

Euphemia - I am willing to bet quite a lot of money that the Scandinavians would provide their children with appropriate clothing for the weather. They know how to kit them out over there!

Personally I would put on my sweetest smile and enquire what variety of winter PE kit the school requires. Our infants are encouraged to bring in sweatshirts and tracksuit bottoms, and if they don't have them, they are allowed to wear their school sweatshirt in cold weather.

And if it really is school policy for them to wear T-shirts and shorts, I would kick up a stink. That's prehistoric.

We would not do outdoors pe at all after September.

Children are appropriately dressed for outdoor play though: Merino wool base layer, fleece or wool jumpers, under outdoor clothing, thermal hats and gloves, and big boots. This they wear for outdoor play, be it running up the hill to go down on sledges, or playing football at breaktime.

Even outdoors football with most sports clubs come to a stop after September.

There is dressing warm, and being outright silly. We respect cold climates, and DO NOT have outdoors pe in such cold temperatures.

Children are sent to school with their summer PE kit, for indoor use.

id be bloody livid and would be having a word with school.

We've been doing outside games, with tracksuits and hats. Fast-paced and lively, no standing around. Our rule is that the teacher should be wearing a tracksuit as well.
